    Default The Majestic Joris

    Gentlemen,

This is my new Joris, the French-made open comb double edge shaver. It's an aggressive razor that shaves much like a straight razor, although it is less forgiving. The Joris is for trained hands, with a shave that is fabulous.

That is one beautiful piece of hardware my friend. Glad to see you found something that is usable for you.
    Kind Regards,
    Joe

That is a fine looking razor Obie!

I'm not sure if you have the Mühle R41, but if you do, how do you feel they compare?
I have the R41 and really enjoy how that thing shaves.
The reason I'm asking is your statement of it shaving much like a straight.
That is pretty much my feelings about the R41

Nice Obie! Probably a bit agressive for me as my standard is a late 40's aristocrat and a new futur that I am still using on 2.

    Hello Joe,

Yes, the Joris is a gorgeous razor. This one has the buffalo horn handle. The shave is really aggressive and you need a careful hand. Since my skin has quite a few miles on it, I also do almost as much stretching as I do with the straight. Here, too, the basic rules of straight razor shaving apply: zero pressure and watch the angle. I usually shave in three passes, straight or DE, but with the Joris I cut it down to two and some clean up. Having a tough beard and sensitive skin, I can't handle three passes with the Joris. It's an incredible shaver, but, as I noted earlier, it needs a fully trained hand. Now, I must figure out what to do with my many milder DE razors.

    Hello Birnando,

I had the Muhle R41. I must say, my dear friend, I did not like it at all. Yes, that, too, as you say, shaves like a straight razor. Yet, I found the R41 harsh and mean. Really. Something in that razor did not agree with my temperament, and with my skin. I can't put my finger on it.

The blade exposure on both razors is about as wide as that on a Sheffield. The balance in the two razors, however, is wide apart. I found the balance in the Joris beautifully distributed, with the heavier weight on top. The same is true of the R41. But the buffalo horn handle on the Joris gave me a soft and luxurious grip. Also, the handle is longer, which helps in the grip. I think the Joris is just a nicer razor. Yes, of course, but it also costs a bloody fortune. What a glorious shaver, though. I have several other mostly improvised open comb razors, and I love them, but the Joris is in its own class.

Thanks, Robert. Yes, the Joris is aggressive. That's why it's not for everyone. I think the shave is easier for those accustomed to straight razors.

I love the Aristocrat. What a beautiful razor. I would even call it a perfect razor — in every respect. I have two 1948 models and they are sweet and lovely. I am saving both for my grandsons. Also two Fatboys for them. I use the Aristocrat and the Fatboy regularly and can't say enough good things about them. Fabulous American workmanship, indeed.

Thanks for the great break-down of the two razors Obie
I appreciate your words and experiences regarding this.

While I do like the R41, I definitely see your arguments against it.
Balance being one of them, it really isn't a star in that area.

I guess there is but one solution to this for me, I will have to give a Joris a go for myself

    Birnando,
I think the Joris will dazzle you. I have seen photos of some of your magnificent straights. The Joris will fit it comfortably. By the way, I have two more Joris razors coming: one gold plated with the light buffalo horn handle, and one palladium in the rosewood handle. Suddenly I am hooked on the Joris. That's dangerous, especially since the dearly beloved tells me, "Now I see the double edge razors growing like rabbits."

Thank you my friend, very kind of you to mention my meager collection of razors

Yes, there are dangers in this hobby, no doubt about that!
If you'll pardon me, I think I will keep the words of your significant other away from mine's ears, she will only be too happy to agree to that

I look forward to both seeing your new acquistions as well as reading your take on their performance.
    Thanks again!
