Air travel with DE

So this past week I flew from Philly to Chicago with my DE, both TSA scans let my DE through without even checking to see if there was a blade in there. The return trip I had a bag inspection at which point they pulled some cables a roll of quarter out then ran it through. I could clearly see the DE on the screen and said maybe its the safety razor, but the guy said nope, just allot of clutter so they had to pull some stuff out (I only travel with one bag).

Now I didn't have any blades since I knew I was stopping at a local store to pick some up, but shouldn't they have checked the DE?

The first thing that comes to mind is that line from "O brother"

Right after 9-11 I lost my nail clippers to security but they did not touch my Persona shavette and 2 spare blades...

Keep doing the right thing.
And I mail a couple of blades to the hotel when I have to travel with the DE.
Better than the hit or miss of what they have when I get there.

My sister got on a plane to come visit me once, with a gift for me. It was a tub of shaving cream, and they confiscated it! It's too bad, that in this day & age of world problems & crime, that we have to be so careful of what we take to the airport. I guess it's safer to buy what you need at your destination.

I'd never try to bring a DE blade on board but I thought for sure they would want to at least check the razor.

I'm more concerned they let it go.

While I was getting my complimentary sexual harassment by the DHS on one occasion, the guy (my boyfriend for the day? :cool:) also looked through my hand luggage and saw my disassembled Tech (in a Ziploc). He made a point of asking me if I had any blades on my carryon, and I made a special point of reassuring him that all the sharps are in my checked luggage.

Oh no... my wife is out east and picked me up a tub of AOS Sandalwood (love the stuff). She is flying in tomorrow. I hope I'll receive my gift.

She could always mail it to you before she leaves.

As an airline pilot that have to go through a lot of check points, never, in almost a year of wet shaving and traveling with the DE with one blade in it, have they ask to see it or confiscated (could be the uniform). Not that I'm recommending it, you could get a more intimate search that you bargain for if they want, but you will just have to surender them if they are discover. As long as you keep it in context (its for shaving) you should and I say should, that's my disclaimer, not get into trouble. I'm not a TSA agent, but I know how they operate.
Having said that, I have now, several DE blades in most location I frequent. I'm about to change my traveling system to a feather artist, I don't think I'll chance it with the blade on the SS artist club. I may however try to mail them ahead of time to the hotels or gateways I frequent. Double O

I travel with my DE and have never had a problem with it in my carry-on although it's a old super speed and quite obviously a razor. I'm sure they notice that and a few cigars I put in there. I like Churchill and big sizes and I often thought they might look more dangerous in the xray than the DE, but they've never opened the bag. Maybe they are so used to seeing everything they can tell. I do put the blades in the checked luggage; if the bag gets lost, CVS or Walgreen blades will easily get me through a week or so. However, I carry the razor in my carry on just in case luggage gets lost.

I fly with an unloaded DE...8 out of 10 times, they don't check...

But they have checked...it's only a minor inconvenience...so I'll just keep doing it the right way

That's why I keep mine in pieces and in a Ziploc bag. That way they can examine all of the pieces without getting their grubby hands on my shaving implements.

She's back and I got my cream. No problems at all it seems. Yay lol. :)

A few weeks back I stopped at the L'occitane store in Charlotte on a layover and grabbed a tube of Cade shaving cream. Then I found out my flight was over sold and I had to wait until the next morning to fly out. They put me up in a hotel but the TSA wouldn't let the Cade back through.

I do keep the blade out of my shavette and DE in my carry on bag, though.

I wonder if airport personnel can tell if there is a blade inside the DE? Maybe the blade would show up, ya know?

Yeah. I was peeved. I got to keep the ASB though. It comes in a sub 3oz tube. I wrote a letter to L'occitane so I'm hoping they take.pity on me.

Wow - that would be something if they did - worth a try.

I always travel with a DE. 9/10 times I get checked so I've made it a habit of taking the DE out and opening it before putting it through the Xray. I don't use shaving cream though so I've never had a problem with fluid volume.

I used to travel quite a bit but never tried with a DE.

As posted above, it used to be that you couldn't even have a nail file on some nail clippers in hand luggage.

But within the last couple of years they've reduced the restriction, in Europe at least, to allow up to a 3 inch blade. I don't quite understand why because unless you want a "Call that a knife?" moment, 3 inches must be plenty to cause some trouble.

Obviously DE blades are under 3 inches so presumably are okay?

Edit: Okay, just checked. At Heathrow you can have a knife blade up to 6cm (so more like 2.5 inches) and no razor blades. TSA say no razor blades either. My mistake :)

Wow, that is surprising! i had assumed all unorthodox razors were checked.

I take my DE in pieces also in a ZipLoc. It's like easy to inspect, I guess.The blades I keep in the checked luggage, and I use soap, so no problem like with cream tubes.

From this I would say, if you don't mind checking luggage, you're good to go. If you plan on carrying your luggage on the plane, either bring the SR "unloaded", and figure out how to score some blades at your destination or take the company G5.
