Thread: Barbasol DE

Found a Barbasol DE this week cruising around. Cleaned it up and loaded a feather in... Great shave! Almost felt like I was cheating on my straight.

Anyone else run into one of these? I like that the bottom turns to remove the cap, making it a 2 piece.

Closed comb but it seems the angle is great enough to make it perform like an open comb. Fairly aggressive but easy to work with. Right up there with my Fat Boy on a 7.

Every since you sent me that Gillette, I've been looking. We went to 5 yrads sales & 2 thrift shops today, no razors found.

I did get 16" Craftsman Adjustable wrench in great condition for $10.00; why, I don't know.

Tools are handy too lol

I always seem to find DE's floating around in shops or !traights that look like they've been used to open paint cans.

Always looking for a nice straight, but I'll take a DE if it looks halfway decent

The Barbasol you've got, there are two similar models, is one of my keepers. I do shave with mine every once in awhile. I compare it more to the Gillette 'Big Fellow' than a fatboy. It is the same length give or take a millimeter and a great shaver IMO. Of the two Barbasols it is the better of the two models but the other one ain't bad either.

Nice thing about picking up Craftsman hand tools is that Sears has a lifetime warranty on them. Even if you buy them for pennies in bad shape, sears will replace them no questions asked.

I have one of these, although not in as good of condition. Good shaver, I've heard it called the Grand daddy of the Muhle R41. Similar in looks but I think the R41 is much, much more aggressive.

Unfortunately I seem to have "fished out" all my local sources of both safety and straight razors. Apparently, anything they had that was worth buying is already in my house. The thing that always amazed me about people selling beat up, sometimes nearly unrestorable straight razors is how proud they are of them. I can't tell you how many straights I've seen that were absolute garbage but had $50 price tag.

Conversely though, some of my best razors came from people who totally didn't know what they had and since everyone knows "nobody uses these anymore" they were content just to let them go and make a buck or two in the process. Example: C.V. Heljestrand Mk-4 (no rust at all) $5. I got it home cleaned it with Never Dull, touch up hone and I was good to go. In fact, I believe I'll shave with that one tomorrow.

I'll have to look up a big fellow, haven't seen those models yet. I intended to clean this one up and sell it (since its in the original case and has blades), but I think I'll hold on to her after seeing how well she shaves.

i had the Floating Head version which is might be a bit more aggressive than that one, but i am not sure if you have the same version or the other model.
i found it to be a tad too much for me; not quite like the R41 2011, but aggressive, nonetheless.

Here is a Big Fellow alongside a Barbasol. Big Fellow is also a DFS.
