Thread: First shave with a de super speed

The light touch needed to shave comfortably with a DE is similar to straight shaving, so the transition should go fairly smoothly. Some DEs are so much more aggressive than a straight that they require a lighter touch and more care when shaving. Every tool has its own "personality" which needs to be learned.

Hi all!

I started shaving with my dad’s Gillette DE when I was 14, then dad switched to the single edge injector blades, then to an electric. The electric tore my face up so bad that it looked like I had tried to remove my beard with 100 grit sandpaper and a sander! Enough of that BS! I went back to injectors!

I eventually sinned and went to disposables and then saw the light and was saved 3+ years ago when some kind of divine guidance guided me to my uncles Genco Grant, I sent it out for sharpening and I’ve never looked back!!! I thank what ever force it was that led me down the path of deliverance from Disposable’s Evil!!!

To say that I know have more straights than I need is an understatement but I can’t part with any of them!

I asked my very good friend pinklather to keep his eyes out for a DE when he hit the annual antique show and I’d reimburse him for his trouble and shipping if he found one; he gave me a like new non adjustable Gillette! He recommended the Derby blades so I ordered a 100 count pack.

When I went to use it, it was just like riding a bike! No Nick, No Cuts, No Errors! A perfect game!!

pinklather also gave my son one of his personal De’s! He uses his more than I do but he still loves to use his Friodur!!

The one thing that I always advise about using the DE is that just like a straight, you don’t use ‘pressure’! Unlike those disposables, jus the weight of the razor is enough! The angle is also important just like a straight!

Thanks my friend! Now you know why I asked you about my son being able to use it in the Marine Corp after Boot Camp along with his DE!

As I said he uses the DE more! I find my DE giving a shave that's close to my straights but the shave doesn't last as long!!

With a straight, my shaves will hold good enough for my companies requirements for about 24+ hours. The DE shaves start to really break down before 18 hours!

With that said, if for some reason, I'd be forced to stop using a straight, the DE would do very nicely!

I found it very easy to go from a straight to a de cause I had the angle of attack

I agree, having a nice rotation of SE and DE keeps shaving fun.

I know that I am getting into this thread at a late time, however, I have a prespective on going from a multi blade razor to a double edge vintage Gillette. I had spent many, many years with the vast number of cartridge and disposable razors until one day I happened to find my late father in law's vintage DE Gillette. I spent a fair amount of time on this board and others and learned how to clean the razor and how to shave with it. I started out still using the can Gillette cream and found that I got fairly good shaves with the Dollar Store blades and foam. About a week ago I started to use a brush and some vintage Williams soap and found that it added to my enjoyment. My next step will be to get an assortment of blades and find which I like best and keep progressing with comfortable and close shaves. I shave every day and have only nicked myself a couple of times. I credit all of the information I have gotten from this and other fourms for my painless transition. Oh, by the way, my one Gillette has grown to 13 and I also have four Gems, one Star and three Segal razors, did I mention that I am a born collector?

No, I do not know how to post pictures but will learn and post them when I get that smart.
