First shave with a de super speed

Usually shave with a straight, but I wanted to give a de a shot. So i saw a good price on a super speed on eBay picked it up brought it home cleaned her up a lil Maas came out like new. I put a merkur de blade in her was still laying around from my days of the shavette, and I shaved with her. Ok now I'm hooked on all types of wet shaving. Some nicks on the neck but nothing crazy. I really didn't find it that difficult to shave with the de, maybe because I have been shaving with a straight for about a year. I feel that everybody should have a de in there shaving kit for a quick shave when u can't use your straight.. Just a great shave ... ;)

I feel the same way. I have gone for a few yrs of using the straight, just picked up a Gillette Slim, and wow, quick and easy, almost no thought at all.

Glad to hear it, I enjoy my DE too.

I definitely think it helps to go Straight to DE (a horrible line, I know ;)). I had perhaps a couple years worth of SR experience before picking up a safety razor for the first time, and I took to it immediately. This is vastly different from some accounts I've read where someone will go from a Mach 3 to a DE and end up looking like they went 3 rounds with the Champ. It happens often.

I went from a Mach 3 to a de before going to a sr. My first shave looked like I had acupuncture on my face... Just recently (after about 8 months of sr shaving) i thought I would try the old de again, after the shave I decided that I would teach my girlfriend to wet shave and stick to my straight due to me having acupuncture face again!!

Next step is to get a cheap SE and try that. I love mine!

There's a reason Super Speeds were Gillette's bread and butter for so many years. Smooth and efficient shavers all, almost all of them still look good decades after they were made.

Yes, that's what I did when I first got into wetshaving. I went from a Mach 3, to a vintage DE, to a straight razor. There was a learning curve with the DE for me, and for the first while, I did look like I went 3 rounds with the Champ! It's natural to try and speed shave like you did with the Mach 3, but it doesn't end well.

I have a 1956 Gillette SS that belonged
to my dad that I use from time to time.

I don't know why, but I had the same luck with my Merkur that Airportchopper did. I had a nick or two but not that bad. Hmm now my first straight razor shave had two bad nicks but I expected to bleed there. Guess I was lucky.

The light touch needed to shave comfortably with a DE is similar to straight shaving, so the transition should go fairly smoothly. Some DEs are so much more aggressive than a straight that they require a lighter touch and more care when shaving. Every tool has its own "personality" which needs to be learned.

Hi all!

I started shaving with my dad’s Gillette DE when I was 14, then dad switched to the single edge injector blades, then to an electric. The electric tore my face up so bad that it looked like I had tried to remove my beard with 100 grit sandpaper and a sander! Enough of that BS! I went back to injectors!

I eventually sinned and went to disposables and then saw the light and was saved 3+ years ago when some kind of divine guidance guided me to my uncles Genco Grant, I sent it out for sharpening and I’ve never looked back!!! I thank what ever force it was that led me down the path of deliverance from Disposable’s Evil!!!

To say that I know have more straights than I need is an understatement but I can’t part with any of them!

I asked my very good friend pinklather to keep his eyes out for a DE when he hit the annual antique show and I’d reimburse him for his trouble and shipping if he found one; he gave me a like new non adjustable Gillette! He recommended the Derby blades so I ordered a 100 count pack.

When I went to use it, it was just like riding a bike! No Nick, No Cuts, No Errors! A perfect game!!

pinklather also gave my son one of his personal De’s! He uses his more than I do but he still loves to use his Friodur!!

The one thing that I always advise about using the DE is that just like a straight, you don’t use ‘pressure’! Unlike those disposables, jus the weight of the razor is enough! The angle is also important just like a straight!

Thanks my friend! Now you know why I asked you about my son being able to use it in the Marine Corp after Boot Camp along with his DE!

As I said he uses the DE more! I find my DE giving a shave that's close to my straights but the shave doesn't last as long!!

With a straight, my shaves will hold good enough for my companies requirements for about 24+ hours. The DE shaves start to really break down before 18 hours!:shrug:

With that said, if for some reason, I'd be forced to stop using a straight, the DE would do very nicely!:tu

I found it very easy to go from a straight to a de cause I had the angle of attack

I agree, having a nice rotation of SE and DE keeps shaving fun.

I know that I am getting into this thread at a late time, however, I have a prespective on going from a multi blade razor to a double edge vintage Gillette. I had spent many, many years with the vast number of cartridge and disposable razors until one day I happened to find my late father in law's vintage DE Gillette. I spent a fair amount of time on this board and others and learned how to clean the razor and how to shave with it. I started out still using the can Gillette cream and found that I got fairly good shaves with the Dollar Store blades and foam. About a week ago I started to use a brush and some vintage Williams soap and found that it added to my enjoyment. My next step will be to get an assortment of blades and find which I like best and keep progressing with comfortable and close shaves. I shave every day and have only nicked myself a couple of times. I credit all of the information I have gotten from this and other fourms for my painless transition. Oh, by the way, my one Gillette has grown to 13 and I also have four Gems, one Star and three Segal razors, did I mention that I am a born collector?

No, I do not know how to post pictures but will learn and post them when I get that smart.
