That's a damn fine looking DE! Enjoy!
Congratulations, Wxman. That Edwin Jagger is a superb mid-range shaver with impeccable workmanship. It's an exceptionally fine Christmas gift. Well done.
Thanks! Just had a shave with it, and it is a very different animal compared with my straights. I'm starting to get better with the straights, but I hacked my neck up pretty good in one spot with this one. Time for more learning!
I actually cut myself more with a DE than I do with a straight. Consequently, I've gravitated exclusively to the straight.
I'm still not nic free wi a strait yet, but a whole lot better than when I began. I won't give up in this though either...one day I'll have them both down and pick whatever I'm in the mood for that day.
I use DE's on days when I don't have the time to shave with a straight razor.
It's counterintuitive, but it's actually easier to cut yourself with a DE than a straight razor.
The trick is to use very little pressure and a steep angle, that is almost flat against your face, with a DE.
Congrats on the DE. I have used one for many years and continue to enjoy them when I feel the need to shave in the shower.
I promised myself an EJ DE for Christmas 2 or 3 years ago and I'm still waiting lol....
Congrats, I'm sure you'll be happy with your new toy.
Vry nice nice looking DE . Congratulations. I myself use a DE on my work days , since I am newer to straight razor shaving and much slower with a straight . I get a good shave with a DE using advanced techniques ( the gillette slide and buffing), but not as a good as a straight. I have to shave daily with a DE and only every other day with a straight. I use only feather blades; it costs more than other DE blades but it ia worth it when you compare the sharpness and quality you get with feather. I wish the Merkur 39C was made in an open comb; I prefer open comb DE's. I would like to try a slant , but will only do so if has an open comb. Again congratulations.
Edwin Jagger makes a fine DE, enjoy it my friend
Thinking indeed to go buy some sample blades. I have some of the Derby's that came with it, but these things are tearing me apart. Anyone have some suggestions, or is a blade sampler the best route here?
Derby blades are (IMHO) dull -- too dull to be comfortable.
Gillette "Super Thin Platinum" (I used one this morning) are better. Astras are way better, sharp and reasonably forgiving. Feathers are very sharp -- but there's a rule with Feathers:
. . . "no pressure" really means "no pressure".
They're not forgiving of mistakes. If you're careful, and have a light touch, they give a very nice shave.
A blade sampler would be a good idea -- the EJ razor is pretty mild, and you'll find something you really like to use.

Thanks for the tips. I think I'll get the sampler that SRD sells, but I'm guessing they're out of stock as it doesn't show up on their site currently.
I've always wanted an EJ. They just have such amazing finish to them.
The EJ razors are beautiful. They have the same head as the Muhle R89, and the chrome finish on the EJ is comparable to the Muhle. If you look under Obie's Conversations in the home page of this forum, you'll find a great interview he did with Neil Jagger, principal of EJ.
Blades are a subjective personal choice. A sampler pack is the way to go. Bullgose Shaving has some good sampler packs, as does West Coast Shaving.
I have a Merkur that I use but the EJ is nice tool. Blade wise I like the astra Green packs they are really well priced on amazon. I have used Merkur blades and they are not very good. feather blades are nice but very sharp. I didn't find derby blades that bade but they dull quick. The Astra blades work great for my face and my head.
