I am primarily a SR user but recently decided to branch into DE shaving. While I enjoy the speed I can shave with a DE, I noticed it is almost impossible to get my lines straight for my beard. I was wondering if there was a trick or if it's just practice? I like the speed of the DE but it is nullified when I have to use my straight to clean up the lines.

Pls define precision in shaving.
I don't think the DE is as precision as the straight, but also don't think it's impossible to get thing's lined up with a DE. So I'm going to say it's all in what you get use to using. I sport a goatee and use a DE most of the time saving the str8 shaves for my days off.
I mean the hair line of my beard. I like to shave my cheeks and neck to keep the beard looking neat and being able to make those hair lines perfectly straight helps with that look.Quote:

Defining beard lines with a straight is easier, by is still very easy with a DE. The more you use one the better feel you'll have for where the blade is at all times. And the thicker the beard, the whiskers will stop the razor almost by itself. It also helps if you hold the DE closer to the head for better control.
When you have a beard one advantage the DE has over the straight is its ability to get into tight spaces.
I think some DEs are "more precise" than others. I use a Merkur Futur and the head is huge making it a little harder. But I have another DE which is much smaller and therefore easier to follow such lines.
If you pick up a light weight DE like a bakelite one to use for the lines on your beard it should work great. The heavier the razor the easier it will be to mess up the lines. I don't grow facial hair because of my job. I have never had to do this, but I know there are a lot of people that do so I would keep an eye out. I use my DE during travel and for shaving my head. I am still working out the Str8 razor control.
