    Default Single Edge Safety Razors

I'm trying to learn about SEs. Are they similar to DEs in that some are very aggressive? What a some of the best brands? What about blades? Suggestions?

    Thanks for your patience.

Just IMO, the Gem was popular back when I was a kid. Not as popular as a DE but they were around for years. Fairly aggressive but not a lot of good blades made for them. The standard Gem blades are alright and the Ted Pella are pretty good.

The Schick was a really good SE razor and so were the blades. I'm talking 45 years ago. I don't know what the status of blades is on those nowadays. They require an injector gizmo to insert the blade. If I was going after an SE a Schick would be my choice. Those are the only two brands I know anything about.

I have a gem, but it is my last go to razor.. I never liked the angle you have to hold them at.. But, you gotta at least try them once to get it out of your mind.. Just go cheap first so yoou dont waste to much money if you dont like it

Lol, I just pulled the trigger on a GEM 1941. It looked great, no rust, water stains or pitting for $9 plus $2 for shipping. I figure if anything I'll skip Starbucks tomorrow. At the very least, it is a beautiful piece of history.

I'm lucky I have a fantastic shaving-oriented pharmacy here in NYC. It's called Pasteur, I was there yesterday to pick up a Merkur Futur and they have a pretty large selection of single edge blades.

Pixelfixed, what blades are you looking for?

My local Walgreens carry them and believe they're the GEM brand. So you might want to check out your local pharmacy to see if they have them.

I have a Schick injector and you can still get blades at Amazon for them. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss...or%2Caps%2C217

Ted Pella coated were considered about the best of the bunch some years ago. Not sure about now. I hear through the grapevine that they will only ship to a business address now but don't know how accurate that is. I imagine you can still get that style blade at home depot if you're looking for industrial grade.
