    Default Vintage Gillette safety razor

I was lucky enought to find a Gillette New Model short comb DE on my holidays. Any experts in the models of Gillette DEs feel free to correct what model it is on the good chance I am wrong. In any event, after using this DE quite a bit I would say anyone looking for a slightly aggressive DE capable of giving super shaves should consider these vintage Gillette DEs. Man they shave close with Astra SP blades. I lucked into a gold one for cheap otherwise a chrome/nickle one would be just as good. You have to be very conscious of the angle of the blade and use next to no weight on the blade but after using straights that should be no problem.

Right you are, Bob. Those are fine razors and good shavers. I had one in near mint condition and sold it, for which I still kick myself in the tokhus.

    I have it
It's not too aggressive but it' good enough for a good shave.

I have one too. I have the gillette slim but prefer this open comb model. I actually shaved with it this morning and got a really smooth close shave.

Couldn't agree more gents. It is just aggressive enough to give a really smooth close shave. Very nice design.

I just picked up one of these as well. I just got into straight shaving (about 15-20 shaves now), and I hadn't really planned on buying a DE so soon (eventually, though). But, I bundled some things together to get a good deal on a Wostenholm...you know how it goes. So, now I have a Gillette "New." Couple of questions:

Does anyone know how to tell if I have a short comb or a long comb (I know this seems obvious, but I have no reference point)?

Blade recommendations?- I realize that this is a matter of personal preference and that I should get a sampler pack. But, any recommendations from experience with this razor would be appreciated as it will help me to choose a sampler pack with a certain selection. Also, anyone recommend a good vendor from whom to purchase a sampler pack (good price, good selection)?

Any other advice particular to this razor or DE shaving in general (coming from a str8, of course)?

Maybe search eboy and check out the photos to see the difference. Been using Astra SPs in mine with good results. I would say to try and use an angle on the head/blade similar to when using a straight and no pressure as with a straight also.
