First Shavette Shave

I bought the cheapest shavette I could find on Amazon recently and shaved for church with it this morning.

I bought the "Utopia" and it came with 100 Turkish Derby blades. Stainless steel construction with aluminum wedge.

The angle was a bit steeper than with regular straights and my touch was very light. I have read the horror stories of shredded faces and deep cuts from heavy handed shaving with these so I was very cautious.

My lather was cheapie VDH soap puck brought to a nice thick heavy lather on the face. The razor glided without dragging or skipping. I was impressed.

I have to say the quality of the shave is AWESOME! I did WTG and ATG and Razor Rocked (Alum block) my face and had very little feedback (sting) when I did so. Couple bumps on my face were weepers, but the alum squared that away. I finished off with Pinaud "Whiskey Woods".

I have to say I am sold on the shavette for now. I will wait for a couple days to see if I get bumps or burn and go from there.

I still have all my straights and plan to keep and use them till they put me in the ground. I just wanted to try this and see what all the fuss was about.

Third shave today with Shavette. Did just fine, however they don't have the soul or the balance of the rest of my straight razors.

IMHO a real straight and a shavette are just two look alike different shaving tools, just like a bicycle and a tricycle are two look alike different vehicles.

Obviously, a shavette will work. Most health codes prohibit barbers from using a real straight razor, so they have to use shavettes. However, I love your statement that "they don't have the soul or the balance" of a real straight. If you really like the keenness of a shavette, I suggest you take a look at some of the premium quality shavettes such as the Feather Artist club. They are more likely to capture the "soul and balance" of a real SR. They are available in both folding and Kamisori style handles.

Plus 1 on the Feather Artist club razor, I don't call it a shavette cause its really in its own class. it has a good feel to it like a straight. I have an RG folding and its my travel razor, no strop and without a doubt as sharp as you will get with the super Pro. but you can also get less aggressive blades for it and a guarded one too. Tc
