Cheap shavette - surprisingly good results

Well, after about ten years of shaving with straights and DEs, I finally got around to trying a shavette. Prior to this, my only experience with them was from the barber doing some trimming, but I decided the time had finally arrived...

So I hopped on ebay, and bought this bad boy:

I liked it because the blade had sort of feather-esque lines, although it has a flippy-down thingy for blade retention rather than the proper feather system. Also, I thought the scales were absolutely wonderfully tacky in the ebay pic, and they didn't disappoint. :) I may make some new ones for it some day, but am not in a rush to devote time and $$ to dressing up a $10 blade. And to be fair, they're not quite as hideous in person as they appear in the pic.

The transaction was surprisingly smooth with much quicker shipping that I had expected. Stuff from China can arrive here in ten days, three months, or never. This took about two weeks to arrive. Great communication and service from the seller too.

And the best part? It shaved beautifully! I threw in a blade from the first pack I saw in the shave den (Dorco), lathered up, and enjoyed a really nice smooth shave. I think I may have a new addition to my travel kit. :tu

You have more courage than I do in the SR shaving arena, and way to go determining that these cheap, Chinese shavettes do get the job done in a pinch. With that said, I have no plans to use one EVER. :)

The only shavette I have is a cheap one from Sally's Beauty Supply. It came with Derby Professional half-blades. The experience with it was not good, but I am not sure how much was due to the razor and how much was due to the Derby blades. I do not know how the Derby Professional blades compare to the Derby Extra blades, but the later are not nearly sharp enough for my beard.

I now have a collection of about 25 straights along with a number of DE razors and a ATT SE1 single edge that uses Feather AC blades. If I ever purchase another shavette, it will be one of the Artist Club razors.
However, I do have a pack of PermaSharp half blades that I might try in the cheap shavette, However, PermaSharp blades are so sharp that I am a little afraid of doing so, even though I have experience with straights. I am not sure the cheap shavette is balanced well enough to give me full control.

Nice report on the cheap Chinese shavette. I think someone else was trying to buy one lately but had issues. Guess some guys can push that "Buy Now" button better than others. For that price I might even give it a try.

I think I'm with you there. This purchase was a bit of an anomaly for me as I usually try to spend once on something that is well made and will last rather than cheap garbage. *However* it turned out that this was cheap garbage that shaved well. :) If I do have a next time for a shavette, it will be for the real deal.

It would actually cost a couple of bucks more to ship it to you in BC than to order another one from China. Weird.

I’m sure that manufactured stuff ships from China in government paid shipping containers. It’s the only way it makes sense. I have the info and will contact the seller for one. Thanks for the info, I’ve been looking but have hesitated because I was afraid that the quality and performance would not be there.

I used a shavette for 7 years before I tried a real straight. But there's so much variety in de blades that it's probably easy to find a blade that agrees with you. Personally? I don't think I could use one again. Lol. I like my straights.

That's really weird. I would have thought he would look for another shipper rather than excluding such a large market. :shrug:

Well there are some current trade issues between China and the US so it may not be the problem with one shipper but all of them. When the top dog are arguing the little guys pay. Don’t get me started on what the Obama administration did to Canadian softwood. . .

they said it was because of something called tool interception yoyomater sold me a clone of the feather artist club folding razor and then the next day canceled the order saying they cant ship items that come with blades to the USA even though in their listing it said they ship it to the USA...

had Nothing to do with pushing the button :D in their ad they say ships to America but after i bought their clone of feather ac folding the next day they said they are not allowed to ship to america because of something called "tool interception"

Well, they say to Americas which should mean North, Central and South Americas although they do list some countries in Central and South America that they don't ship to. Nothing says specifically that they don't ship to The United States of America.

i agree but the seller specifically told me he doesn't ship Anything to the USA that has a blade included even if its just a pack of blades sent separately.. so USA is included even though it doesnt say so....

I wonder if he got burned by some over-zealous customs dude and decided it just wasn't worth the trouble? I mean, the amount of tools and other things with cutting edges that come in from China is staggering, so this seems like a policy decision on his part maybe? As I said before... weird.
