More irritation/burn when stubble is shorter?

Does anyone else find this to be true? After a fantastic shave, I usually skip a day before I shave again. However, after touching up/honing, I can't wait to shave!! The last few times I shaved when I barely had any whiskers to speak of, the shave result was wicked smooth but the irritation/burn was terrible! I am guessing that the lack of hair to provide feedback tricks me into using too much pressure and alter my angles slightly. Any ideas or has this happened to anyone else? Just curious :)

I think you hit the nail on the head with the too much pressure thing. Just my guess but it makes sense to me. I find myself doing that on a third pass atg if I don't get any feedback. It's like i'm digging to make sure or something . :<0)

Mystery solved! I asked essentially the same question a short time ago. Your explanation 'feels' right to me...same thing with multi Pups. Now if I can stop continuing doing the same thing.......

I always find the most gratifying shave is knocking down a three day beard.

No, I don't find it to be true but everyone's skin is different and I do think you are right about too much pressure. I shave every day doing 3 passes and sometimes a second 3 pass shave usually with very little irritation. Any irritation I get is from too much pressure or a declining edge.

What about the fact that you are giving your face 1/2 as much time to heal from the previous shave when you are not waiting 2 days to shave?

Every bodies face and technique is different as Bob said, but I shave everyday with no problems unless (like I said) I over do it. You just have to pay attention to what is happening. The op had it all figured out, he was just curious and maybe looking for confirmation :<0)

I think all of the above theories are true. Those of us with more sensitive skin are definitely better served with waiting a day in between shaves. Works for me! Lucky that it seems to grow back slower than when I shaved with a DE. Never mind the cartridge or electric (shudders...).

I used to shave everyday with the cartridge...now I'm every other day...wonder if I should try the shave everyday project...read many members have tried it...if there is little growth or stubble wonder if that would make you prone to more nicks or irritation??

I shave every other day too and I do believe what you said, shorter means more irritation for me, actually I can feel with my hand and know if the beard is short/long enough to shave in order to get more/less irritated

Generally it would depend on your skin. But in your case you were able to shave daily with a cartridge (that's a feat in itself lol) and you've been at this long enough to be past the skin acclimatization period, so I'd be willing to bet you'll be alright.

I, on the other hand, was never able to shave daily with a cart and conversely still can't with any type of razor, so every other day it is.

looks like it's not just me. due to a lot of radiation not much beard on the sides of my face but my chin is different. to get rid of the stubs on my chin it takes several passes and then a rash. i now shave every other day and some times every 3rd day and use a face lotion every day and that seems to help. even with a safety razor i never could shave every day

Thanks Ryan82 - I think I'll stick with my every other day shave now that I think about it....sheesh....it's not like any of us here actually like shaving....huh...it's not like we're shave nerds or anything??

Since using a homemade pre-shave oil my face is happier as well :)

Well I use to shave with a DE then went to a multi blade for many years. Nothing bad to say about the quality of the shave. Many times a one pass shave, two at best yielded a smooth shave.

I no longer use multi blades but do still use a DE. I'm still searching for the ideal sharpness in my SR, plus technique to yield the best results. Lately I've felt the blade is a little harsh. I still have daily for the most part. I do like shaving everyother day as I feel I get the best quality but work demands otherwise.

I also shave every other day. Whether I'm using a straight or a DE, I'm one of those that goes for comfort over closeness.

I shave every day, sometimes twice morn and evening. I did a little experiment on pressures vs the type of razor last night. It was very interesting. I use Way more pressure w/a heavier blade. The light touch and pre and post shave treatments seem to prevent any irritation.
