I just read somewhere that you shouldn't use the same straight razor two days in a row ! Is this true ?
I think that is a Grimms fairy tale.
Bob
Think that is an old wives tale. Many, many people use the same SR day in and day out for years and get s great shave.
Think of it this way, if half the people shaving with straight razors say you have to wait a day and the other half say you don't, then half of them are wrong. Take your pick as to which half.
The only real downside to using one razor constantly every day, IMO, would be needing to hone it more regularly as it is being used every day. I'm fairly certain that you wouldn't be the first person on this site to shave every day with only one razor.
I have 2 now and 2 others should be here tomorrow, I just thought it was the most ridiculous thing to read ! I was wondering why ? Ok, thank you for keeping me thinking I'm not totally nuts ! LOL
When i began shaving with a shavette, I couldn't help but notice that my ritual was similar to that for Kukri blades in that, spurious rumour has it, once unsheathed they can only be sheathed after they'd spilled blood.
LOL ! LOL !
What if you only have one razor? You either use it every day or shave every other day or shave one day right handed and the next left handed. What I am saying is to me it does not matter.
That's why I thought it was ridiculous to read !
It's a ridiculous wives tale.
You should leave a straight razor exactly 2 more days than the number of razors you currently own, You should be able to quote this number matter of factly to any SWMBO without hesitation. That way it is impossible to have too many razors.
What's SWIBO ?
Sorry I made a typo SWMBO.. She who will be obeyed... The wife in control of RAD.
LOL ! My beautiful Fiancee, actually bought me a Dovo Bismarck 6/8" because she said it was beautiful ! She said this hobby of mine could be something a lot worse, and she loves the BBS results ! ;-)
And Thank You again on the tape tip !
I will get on a kick and use the same one for a month straight, I found no degradation as long as properly cared for.
Shave, clean, light strop linen/ leather, and put up.
Blades I do not use as frequently often need a bit more attention before use.
I think that's related to the idea that razors' "teeth" get bent shaving, and "spring back" while the razor rests. I gather that the notion has not held up to the evidence.
I don't shave every day but I would like to use a different razor each time I shave, each week, each month, each year, RAD
apparently Dovo believes the wives tale too. (copied from there web site)
5. The straight razor I bought a short time ago no longer shaves properly. Do I have to whet it, and how often is this necessary?
DOVO straight razors are whetted in the factory for use (whetting on leather by hand). If you own a suitable strop, you should nevertheless take into account that the razor must first "rest" after use. After the razor has been carefully rinsed and dried, it should not be used again for at least 24 - 48 hours because the fine "fin" on the cutting edge straightens up again extremely slowly. If the razor is stropped too soon (or stropped incorrectly by moving it backwards and forwards without turning it over), the "fin" which is necessary for a close shave breaks off. Between six and fifteen shaves are possible without stropping in between.

I'm stropping before every shave ! LOL !
I've heard this as well, some say you should leave the razor for a day so that the edge realigns itself. If you leave the razor in your bathroom whilst realigning it will also clean your bathroom as well!!! Seriously I think it's a rouse to get us to buy more razors. Like we need any encouragement.
Yes it's true
but is 30 days
That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it LOL
I doubt the razor will complain if you use it two or more days in a row. Your cheeks on the other hand, they may raise a bit of a ruckus...
It's a good excuse to have more than one razor in your inventory if you ask me. The best thing to do is try it out for yourself. Use the same razor for a month, then switch between razors for a few months too. See if using it over and over has any effect on the quality of shave you get. Also, If your not honing your blades yourself, it might be a good idea to have 2 or 3 blades so that when one is away getting sharpened, you still have a sharp one to use.Quote:

Be warned though, once you start buying multiple razors, its hard to stop. :) Good old RAD will grab you and pull you in with its tractor beam.
How's the RAD going??
So i just have to say that SWMBO in my case is a psychologist. Therefore i can never even in passing admit to have RAD while she is around for 2 reasons. First she will think the wrong RAD and berate me for misuse of terminology. After that when i explain the RAD i mean she will develop a treatment plan for me that i am sure would be the horror of just about everyone here. :)
They used to think back in the old days that a razor needed to be "rested" to allow for the steel to hold it's structure. We know now that this isn't the case and that you can use the same razor each and every day with a good stropping. Barbers used the same razor on each customer but always stropped in between shaves.
Read my comment about barbers stropping between shaves. Better yet, try shaving without stropping and then with stropping between shaves and let us know your results.
Also, at times the interpretation of the word gets confused and when they say stropping as in this case they actually mean a touchup on a hone.
