Shaving in the Stan

I'm over here in Afghanistan, and there is not a whole lot of creature comforts. With that said, I find my self fortunate that I can take the time out of my day to shave. After a two year hiatus from straight, I am finally back in the saddle. I finally received my new Dovo Forestal in the mail, and am loving every stroke. It is interesting the thoughts shaving provokes, looking in the mirror and remembering my wife staring at me as I shave. Probably wondering how long I was going to tie the bathroom up for. Watching my grandfather shave, the smells take me there, so very many years gone now. I don't exactly know why I stopped with straights in the first place, but I'm glad to be back at it. The memories of home it brings are welcome and treasured.;)

And in the future you'll have the smells and the actions that will remind you of the good moments while deployed. There are couple of such things, like brushing my teeth while pissing in the woodline while out camping or hunting that brings back those moments of calmness that I experienced doing the same thing, off a hill not into woodline, while looking over the city of Mosul at night. Like everything else in life, embrace those happy things when you can, and thanks for your service.

Hi, and welcome. Thank you for service. I watched my grandpa shave with a straight, and the smell of the soap as well, and it brings up good memories.

It always amazes me what can trigger my memory to bring back ghosts. It's not always a bad thing. I'm happy you can find some relaxation and a way to connect back to your family. Stay safe brother.

I don't wear the uniform any more, but I choose to work along side my brothers and sisters still. There is a level of professionalism here that you just don't see at home any more, less back stabbing and one-upmanship and more solidarity, even between other countries. I didn't leave by choice, another victim of the down sizing we went through back in 2005-2006. I thank you all for the well wishes, and for those of you who served, carry on!
