Your very first straight razor

Do you remember your very first straight razor?
What brand was it? How big? Do you still have it?!? How did it shave?


I remember my first straight razor. A beautiful 5/8 black horn scale semi mirror finished wade and butcher s.e. Beautiful blade that shaved and still shaves well. I remember cutting my face up the first few times but learned really fast how not to. Yes i still have it and as soon as I can figure out this dam android phones camera works, I'll make it a point to upload a pic or 2. :aargh: :rofl2:

Dovo Best 5/8 with black plastic scales from SRD. I was too intimidated to shave with it for a month or so. Finally got the courage and shaved my whole face. I learned that razors are sharp and cut you when you don't know how to use them.

I passed that razor on to another new shaver when my collection had grown to around 20 razors

My first was a dovo master 6/8. Still use it weekly shaves great and it was the razor I learned to hone on :)

Dickenson's Invicta 5/8. Still a very sharp blade - try the sharpest one in the box - since I've owned it the longest. I treat myself to it only rarely. Must bring it up again soon :)

Hibbard spencer bartlet - OVB, bought from ebay with frown (yes i was naieve) sent it off for a honing - against the honists advice, got it back by which time it was 4/8, used it once, ended up giving it to a friend.
Then came my first usable straight, a broeker bros bone handled 5/8 (and a wee bit) full hollow. I still have it as a backup but never really use it, and havent for about 9 months or so.

Mine was a brand new 6/8s TI with Cow Horn Scales. I still have it and use it from time to time. it's a great shaver.

Mine was a 5/8 Dovo Black Star with brown Pakka scales. I still have it but rarely use it.

Mine was a 4/8 Malteser bought at the Sally Anne http://straightrazorpalace.com/razor...nd-needed.html . Still have it in rotation and still shaves well even though it is not in my favourite size.

Couldn't remember the first five. Sold them after I got interested in Ducks. I do remember the first Satinedge. Still in rotation after 2 years. Has a few Satin friends now :<0)

Dovo Best Quality 5/8, half hollow - will always have a place in my rotation.

My first was actually a Boker 4/8 that I bought on a whim at a cutlery shop. At the time I didn't know anything about shave ready or such. Not knowing anything at all but for the fact that my razor was not sharp, I bought a Dovo that was promised to be shave ready. It was not. Frustrated, I decided to buy my way out of the situation. I saw a razor here on SRP in the classified. It was an Eirene 6/8, NOS. The seller said he'd hone it upon the buyers request. I took him up on it. BANG! Finally a shave ready razor. This I consider my first since the other two were useless until I was able to get them honed. I still use this razor regularly as I still love it. It's an extraordinary razor that takes a great edge and shaves smooth and efficiently. It's a sweet looking razor too. And it's rare. I've only seen one or two since then. It's a three pin design, full hollow, and no stabilizer. Since then the Boker is gone (too small for my tastes) and the Dovo, a razor that had a real collection of problems, is relegated to the back of the line. The Eirene still sees regular action and is still a favorite. BTW, thanks Stefan.

The other day I tuned and shave tested it in perpetration of a Den clearing.
It shaves sooo much better when you know what you are doing and have a couple years of practice...

What is your favorite size?

I purchased two in an Antique Shop. A Wade and Butcher Sheffield 7/8 for $27 and a John Primble 1028 Blue Grass 5/8 for $20.

Sure I do: Aust, 5/8 carbon steel, round point, plastic scales.
I still have it, but now prefer slightly larger blades.

Having bought the razor new from SRD, the razor shaved just fine...
...it was my technique that left a lot to be desired then. :td

My first razor was my great grandfathers Boker Red Injun 101 twenty five years ago. still in rotation and a good shaver.

Do I remember it? Hmmmmmmm... Oh ya I just got it last night. Dorko 5/8 round tip. Sill have it too. Lol
I will let you know how it shaves after I use it for the first time this morning.:y

Dovo BQ 5/8" from SRD. My oldest son now uses it at college, but brings it home occasionally for honing and stropping (sadly, he doesn't apply his engineering skills there very much!).:confused:

My first razor was a DD Special No. 1 purchased from my barber in 1968. Still have it and it still shaves great.

Acquired my first in 1968 in Morocco. It was probably French made because Morocco was no longer a French possession, they had close ties in consumer goods. Next move it was packed in the bottom of a box and didn't surface until 1977 when it emerged with numerous chips. Next step was consignment to the dustbin. I do still have the horsehide and carborundum strop. It is going strong 46 years later. I have cleaned it and worked strop dressing into it and replaced the leather grips.
