Razor Personality

At what point does an inanimate object cease being just an object but almost grow a personality?


I have been learning to shave with a worn out, but reliable, old Diamond Spear razor it must have delivered 1000s of shaves before it ended up with me. Over the past months we have become almost close, I have learnt to respect the razor in return it feels like it has learnt to shave me, lost some of its sharp corners that I may have stuck into my jaw line a while ago. It almost feels like a kindly older person in my life that is willing to live with my faults and pick up the slack when my technique wasn't quite good enough.


I have recently purchased a Celebrated Hollow Ground Razor by Wade & Butcher from Jim Millar of this online community.

On receipt of my order we agreed that I would let him know how it shaved. Its taken me 3 attempts with this razor to get a finish on my shave that I would consider good enough to email Jim and say that it is a great razor!
We just had to learn to get along with each other. I am still quite inexperienced shaving with a straight and the razor isn't as patient as my Diamond Spear, in fact it has punished any bad form I have had in wielding it with more cuts and nicks than I care to admit.


So this morning, as I was giving a quick going over with the strop we ha a little conversation at least in my mind anyways, we decided to get along providing that every stroke I do, I do properly and that all my pre shave preparations were up to scratch and not slap dash as they sometimes can be.

With the agreement in principle ringing in my ears I proceeded to have one of the most enjoyable shaves iv had with a finish that im most proud of.

Anyways im aware that this sounds like the ramblings of a mildly schizophrenic crazy man so ill finish now but thanks for reading

Not Schitz, but a version of the human personality profiles that has to come to an understanding with any object of use.

Nope, not crazy at all (psst, call the white coats). The razors in my rotation have the same personality conflicts, we usually have those conversations just before a shave. It's not just my razors tho, my guitars, guns and motorcycles all have different personalities. To date tho, it is only my motorcycles that have names and they usually let me know what their names are.

When does it develop a personality? The instant you pick it up. It samples you DNA, probes the innermost regions of your mind, extends its feelers into your very pores and declares it's ownership of your psyche. Not bad for an 'inanimate' object that is made up of the same atoms as we are, just in a different configuration. (Now you can call the white coats.)

All the stuff in my house talks to me no reason ur razor shouldn't bond with you

I think we have a bunch of very sick puppies here. I could recommend a good shrink to you all.:)

I have had a similar conversation with a certain 5/8" Camillus Cutlery Co spike point in Bamboo scales (‘yes you know who you are!’) that works like a hot knife through butter on fur & flesh as equally efficient & if it back chats & bites me again, it is going to be re-homed one way or another.

to give or associate a personality to an inanimate object is definitely normal (isn't it), like my car Charlotte (a HSV Clubsport R8) she is named & gets treated with respect & when I want to play I let her know & she response.
all my cars have had names both Male & Female mine have been “The grey ghost - AKA The Pig(M), The Nomad, Rex(M), Patty(M), V(F), Ivan(M) & Charlotte(F)”

I haven't named any blades (yet)
but if you were to name a blade would it be male or female?

I would have to go with female on that one.

If you don't respect/care for/pay attention to them you are the one who is sorry in the end.

I have one that is a sadist, but I'm masochistic so we get along fine.

All I can say to this thread is downstairs, locked away, is my Cursed Double Duck Goldedge, sealed inside a brick tomb, with Hex symbols sealing the demonic vampire spirit inside....if you come to close, you'll hear a hissing sound.

Maybe I'm not the romantic type.

But for me a razor is a tool, not a personality, and I take pleasure out of a well designed tool and the skills it takes to handle it.


Nothing personal, and my Friodur ("Call me Frio") said she's o.k. with that, although she can get a bit testy when I mention that Aust gal.

But seriously, yes, they do have personalities. Mine all go "Don't hone her, hone me!" So I hone her up, and 9 times out of 10 she says " Oh no, you are too rough, you rubbed me all the wrong way!"
And then there is the odd one, usually quite good looking, and she says " Ohhh.... yeah baby, that was incredible, you got it just right, I'm going to let you do exactly what you want with me". 20 minutes later, it is all over, I am having a cigarette, she doesn't smoke. We have fond memories, and I will be seeing her again soon.

Don't have any of those, if I did, I wouldn't be typing on a computer, because I certainly wouldn't have one, nor could I afford an internet connection, a home to keep it in, let alone any straight razors.

Been there, done that. I only wish I had had a DD at that time to give to her. As a side note, I should have relied on my cat of that time's reaction to her on first meeting. He attacked her ankles, gave a few good scratches. Never did that before to any one, or after. And she had her own cat at the time. Go figure.
