A little advice please, getting a lot of burn after shaving

Hello all, I have noticed the last few times I have shaved that my skin has been really tightening up and it almost burns and feels dry afterwards. I had only been shaving once every three or four days, but recently got a new thater brush and some penhaligons shave cream so I have been shaving once a day. I had been using the penhaligons endymion that I just bought, but tonight I went back to t&h trafalgar, the stuff I had been using, still getting a dry burning sensation. Thought it was the razor, so I re-honed it today so I dont think that was it. I have been making my lather a little thicker and not as runny, could that be it? Any suggestions I would appreciate it. Am I just shaving to often, I dont grow much facial hair, but darn sure can feel stubble before I shave. Thanks.

Since it is only the last few times it sounds to me like something you're using that is new to the equation, and doesn't agree with your skin. Sounds like you've thought of that. I'd give it a rest for a couple of days if it is possible. Then try again with a combination of kit that you've used in the past with no problems. If it is good with that, next shave add one of the new additions in to it, but only the one. Keep that up until you isolate what is disagreeing with your skin.

I went back to my original cream tonight, I only have one razor that I use, did use the new brush though. Could it be the brush? Its a finest silver tip.... I had been using a pos col conks since I started. Or could it just be from shaving A LOT lately, I have to do 5 passes under my right jaw to get bbs.

The 5 passes just may be it. Every time you use a straight your also exfoliating. So your irritation is likely because your doing too many passes.

Could be a lot of things as mentioned above. I would add that maybe you have added some pressure to your technique and or changed the angle some.
Giving your face a rest is a very good idea. Making corrections will be less valuable with your skin still so tender.

5 Passes?? sounds like a Sharpness issue to me,good luck.

The 5 passes, it's only ever the same spot. Under my right jaw. Everything else is two pass. My hair grows really weird and in every which way but fluent.

I have a couple of spots that never seem to shave as clean as I would like. When I get a wild hair about them I lather shave repeat 3 or 4 times in an attempt to mow them down. What generally happens is I use more pressure each pass causing irritation, nicks and burn.
I think the extra pass or two and unconscious added pressure is my problem.

Most days I just shave them close and move on.

I too have to make a lot of passes on the neck and chin because my beard in that area is very wiry and grows in all kinds of directions. Several months back I would have days where I had the same irritation. I think technique had a lot to do with it but more importantly it ended up being the blade. I had an email from The famous trop maker ( Tony Miller) he stated he stropped on the nylon webbing 30 times and then the leather 30. I was simply leather stropping. Once I started doing that, I never had a sore face again. At about the same time I figured out that if I put as little a pressure on the blade as possible it works better with less irritation also so both of those factors saved the day for me. A sharp blade but unpolished blade does not work well. Strop, strop, strop, light strokes, light strokes. Try it, I seriously doubt it is the soaps and crèmes. oh and by the way I use a Thater 4125/2. It isn't the brush, you have one of the best brushes out there

Thanks for the advice everyone. I will try lighter strokes and give my beard a day or two off. I didn't think it was the brush, but one never knows. I had been stropping 16 linen 32 leather maybe I will double them the next few times. If that doesn't work, could not washing my face with soap before I shave and just using a couple hot towels help?

I would do just that, double the stropping and take a few days off to heal. Good luck

Every so often I get the same issue.

When it gets like you describe I steal my wifes Bio oil. Its a steller product and reduces the heal time. You will smell like a lady, but your burn will be gone.

Seasons are changing and facial chemistry it also changing. We are starting to get colder days and the skin is dryer so you may need to consider the pre/post care abit.

I had this issue with soaps, then I found Truefitt. AMAZING cream!!! 4-5 drops of glycerin, and absolutely amazing. That and I lightened up on the pressure a bit. But whenever I use anything but Truefitt, I can feel the difference. Drop $20 and see what you think, 1 jar lasts months.

EXCELLENT point! I hadn't thought about this, but will be on the lookout for it since my facial skin changes dramatically during the winter.

No I have not, might have to have the wife pick some up.

Razor not well honed will give you a burn feeling

Try using one of the aftershave balms to add some moisture to your skin after your shave. The Nivea, Dove, and Neutrogena aftershave balms are excellent products.

Where are you located ? If you want send me the razor and I will hone it for you.

You will like the Castle Forbes if you like crèmes. I think it is one of the best out there

Speaking of pre/post cream, i found that vitamin e based cream was very good, i just got a generic one from the chemist if i recall. the vitamin e is supposed to promote healing and it also moisturises a bit too, i used to put a bit on both before and after shaving in the early months when i was really abusing my face.
I even used to add a bit to uberlathers, and in fact still add a touch of nivea balm since the vit e ran out, it seems to help, when the nivea runs out i probably wont keep the practice up though.

Shaved this morning and it was a lot better, I used penahligons. I showered then made my lather, put hot water on my face, lathered up and use a lot less of an angle and the shave was smoother and no burn. I think I need to use some water and a little but more sudsy lather than creamy lather. Wife got some aftershave cream, and that definitely helped. Thanks all for the advice, I am going to try some pre shave stuff too, probably start with the glycerin.

The truthis we have all resorted to trying to improve the shave by using different pre shaves, after haves, soaps & crèmes, water etc but in the end, you just need to improve the technique and make sure the blade is shave ready. It will only happen with practice and time. Stay with it, you will get there

I knew the blade was good, I think I just was getting to steep of an angle and making the lather to thick. I will try again tomorrow and see what happens.
