Knowing when to throw in the gloves.

I got a GD razor about 3 or 4 months ago. I am not here to debate GD's that's been done many times on this forum before. I am simply asking for a thought or opinion out of the great wisdom pooled together in one place.... I have another razor that I bought and I can do a one pass on it if I really wanted to but it seems that this just isn't the case with my GD. I like it because it was my first razor but honestly I feel like it's a Prius (my GD) trying to race a Shelby GT (a quality razor). I feel like I'm getting ready to retire it due to the fact it isn't that great. Which brings me to my main question... When have, or do you guys know its time to move on to another razor. What is a way to give it a "proper burial"?

this is my opinion,, why even waste time on a maybe blade? to many good blades out there for about the same money ,, if 50% of them are good ,, that's still not worth my time ,, so just saying , I get these things to shave with , not mess with and make me stressed good luck tc

I have two stubborn razors of good make that I have not touched in months because they frustrate me. I have another one not worth my time similar to a gold dollar. Throw them in an old cigar box and forget them. The two that frustrate me I will revisit, the other... Never

I move on, even from good razors, as I come across better ones, As Richard said, put it in a display. Guests won't know the difference in brands.

As others have said, I have a few that give absolutely great shaves, and a few (some even more valuable) that I can't get a decent shave with. Retire the GD to display or worse...JMHO

Sounds like it's time to try a different razor.If it were me I would pick up a nice Vintage Blade and have it professional honed before use.A couple of brands I like are Dubl Duck F.E.Engels Wester Bros.
Once you shave with a great vintage blade.It hard going back to a lower quality blade.

I get the sentiment part but really, this is your face and pleasure your talking about.

Break the scales off of it and learn to make new scales with it. When you are done with that project, rehone it and peddle it on ebay.

I picked up a GD for $5 at a yard sale, beveled it to 30 degrees with a bastard file. It makes a nice box cutter, cable stripper, paint scraper, and paper weight.

The much maligned GD takes another kicking :gwh:
I do recall one making shave of the day a while back. They are hit and miss, but so are a lot of the new G&F razors, Timor, at 20 x the price. Haven't checked for a while, but are they on the list of razors to avoid? Made in Solingen supposedly.
To save any disappointment, stick with a vintage razor, and send it out for pro- honing. Best of luck.

Now what is wrong with selling a reworked GD on eBay? Because it is fundamentally worse than the other GDs for sale there? If you make it pretty, clearly state its a GD and do not use the phrase "shave ready," What ethical issues have been presented? Never mind that there are many truly "shave ready" GDs out there. They just tend to require work on the blade to make that journey and you will run across a dog or two.

I started with a GD about 6 weeks ago and tried to shave with it for 2 weeks and had to put it away and move on to a much higher quality razor. I paid a little money and a little blood to learn a lesson with the GD.

There are those in the business of making money and those that are here because we enjoy some part of the wet shaving scene.
Usually as beginners, we spend a great deal of time and money buying iffy equipment.and later find there are places to look for guidance.
Most any razor of good steel, well honed, will give some shaves. It is defining consistently good steel and proper honing that is our goal.

I use one to practice honing and learning my stones. I just about never shave with a honed edge more than once but the GD I own hones up just fine and shaves very well too. I can tell the difference between synthetic edges, coticule edges and now JNAT edges. It serves its purpose very well for me.

The story of my life. If only I'd found this site before I forked out 2 hundred on mediocre shaving equipment. Now I'm in the process of getting better equipment. I have a great strop now, a great razor, some killer soap and a nice coti/bbw. I have been slowly replacing all the original stuff I had bought because most of it was unusable.

I'm offended on behalf of my prius. Just saying

Once in a while you will come across a razor that is just past salvation when you buy vintage razors with the intent of restoring them to their former glory.

It happened to me; I guess it happens to most of us who engage into this sort of hobby.

As far as new razors are concerned, this should not occur with a new razor and this is where Gold Dollars (GD) get their reputation as shoddily made and heavy initial maintenance.

In a way, by buying a factory-new GD you take the same gamble as if buying a vintage razor for restoration.

My only question is: Why should I?
