Very helpful video there Mike. You bring up some very important issues that I know get missed. Most safety issues are like you said, common sense but common sense isn't so common these days.
Guys, especially you new guys, be smart, please think safety when shaving with a straight razor. Concentrate on what you are doing and pay close attention to where the razor is at all times. Straight razors can deliver many very enjoyable shaves but also deliver a ton of pain.
Here's hoping all new guys have many safe shaves on their straight razor journey........enjoy!
Interesting Thread,is like using icepicks,do not poke yourself in the eye.:)
You have some pretty good point there.
Yea, there are many ways to cut yourself unintentionally with a straight razor. Nobody needs to be startled by an unexpected intrusion into the bathroom while you are shaving. Especially when you are just beginning and nervous anyway. Just close and lock the bathroom door if you have to. It's natural to try and catch something you have dropped to save it from damage. Resist that urge when you drop your straight razor. This is where having some clothing on while shaving comes in handy too.

Thanks, just don't ask me how I know.

Interesting,I have never dropped a straight Razor, how many people have?
Nor have I, but it only takes one time.

That's just from a 5 minute search here on SRP. It happens more than you think.
Sure it happends,Just never happend to me.
I've had razors ellude my grip before when stropping. Thankfully, no unwanted damage to myself or the razors, but it pulls you out of that Zen zone and immediately into that pucker zone in a hurry ;)
Pixelfixed, I hope it never does, to you or anyone else. Happy, happy shaves!
When I was first learning to strop, I was trying to speed up, and I somehow missed flipping the razor on the return stroke. It ended up coming back toward my hand with the edge leading. The razor skipped along the surface, putting 4 or 5 slices in the strop across it's full width. The edge of the razor stopped about 1/16" from my hand. Pucker factor doesn't begin to describe it. I was shaking for 20 minutes or so after that. It taught me to slow down and PAY ATTENTION.
I'll admit that when I was learning, like one week in, I had my shavette slip out of my soapy hand and fall straight down. Boy was I glad that I had a towel on, because it went blade toward me, straight down the front of the towel. It did cut the towel in one place, but no damage to me. I decided to finish with a cartridge after my heart stopped racing.
Yikes! Close call, Chris.
I always make sure that my hands are dry, the scales are dry, and that my towel is cinched tight now. :)
Never dropped while shaving. I do remember dropping a Greaves in the shop once. Maybe twice. Now I don't carry more than 1 razor at a time in the shop unless they are in a box or wrapped up in something.
I've never dropped a straight razor, but I have cut my strop and chipped it on the sink. There's no way I would shave in the shower, them guys are crazy!
