I rarely even try for BBS and usually just go for a DFS most days
I only go BBS for special occasions and usually need an extra couple of passes on the under jaw line where the hair grows in every direction except the direction I can get with my str8
Yes, but it's taken me over a year. WTG, XTG, ATG. The secret for my neck is to shave straight down chin to bottom of neck with the first pass, this for me is ATG. Then XTG ear to chin I get the bits under my jaw line by pulling hard on the skin to lift it on to the flat part of my jaw line. I've now applied for a new job in a circus as a contorsionist!!
I guess I have a strange neck. I have very little hair growth on my neck and I get it smooth with just a single downward pass.
Maybe I am just lucky to have an abnormal beard growth on my neck?
Yes. Usually only with my best edges and then it is ever so slightly at an angle from jaw line to middle of neck at the collar line. Stretching, slight angle, and a very sharp blade are key IME.
A couple things. First, rest assured that you are not the first person to have this problem. If you were to do a search on the word "neck" you'd uncover countless threads with users like yourself struggling to get it right. You've seen plenty of company over time. Second, slow down a bit and set yourself on smaller, more attainable goals. Select a one inch square on your neck that you want to get right next time or some other segregated region. Know what direction the hair grows and then analyze how you're doing it with your DE. Take note of the angle of attack that is giving you success. Now, after your shave think about how you'll need to do the same with the SR. In many cases, the grip used to hold the razor is the missing link. Keep in mind that gripping the tang of the razor is only one way to hold it. If you're using your right hand, maybe you need to use your left. The key is in knowing how the DE is attacking your beard and replicating it with the SR. Once you nail one small section target another. Then start thinking about a logical sequence that brings them all together in the course of your shave. Break the areas down into smaller problems to be solved one at a time.
Certain razors can help especially those with strong smiles. Those enable you to really get into hard areas. personally I've given up on total BBS long ago. There are a few small areas on my neck that are impossible to get to. However with a small select group of razors I can do it.
I can get BBS, but I have to do what is similar to two ATG passes.
First will be at a very low angle of attack. The spine is almost touching my neck. This keeps my razor from clipping small bumps that are raised at the normal angle of attack.
The second ATG is at normal angle of attack. For some reason because of the first low angle it allows for a close non irritating pass.
If I don't go through this I normally have more weepers than I can count. But since I started this I hardly ever nick myself save the times I'm not paying close enough attention :p
A WTG and an ATG gets my neck BBS. It took a while to manage it. Perseverance!!
OCDShaver really nailed it. Also learning to stretch your skin as you position your razor into those vicarious angles helps tremendously.
First map the direction of the whiskers then figure out how to maneuver the razor to go ATG. For me I need to use both hands on both sides of my neck. I use a backhand scything motion on the bottom of my neck close to the collar bone. Under the jaw line my ATG pass is right to left so I pull up on my cheek with my off hand and use the heel to go straight across just under the jaw bone. It takes time to get the strokes down but it is possible.
I know most of the members here, especially the veterans of straights have seemed to not go for BBS anymore. Me on the other hand being a obsessive perfectionist all the time I tend to strive for BBS every shave. I will not however burn myself up to get it lol. I have two hollows under my jawline that really take some stretching to get. If the blade is larger than 6/8 forget it. Just doesn't happen. Easiest BBS for me is with a feather SS with new blade. I know I just made a lot of guys cringe. :rofl2:
I get a good shave in at about 15 to 20 mins. but every time, i linger around in there chasing the BBS, I dont' finish till about an hour later. I've been bringing my phone in the bathroom to play spotify lately while I shave. It's become like this cult like ritual for me now. My wife asks me "where'd you go?". And I'm like, "shaving". She just rolls her eyes at me.
I am way more concerned with the comfort of my shave than the perfection of it. In general I do a 2 1/2 pass shave the gets most of my face BBS but not 100%. I can take the extra time to buff out the little spots on the sides of my wind pipe, however there is the risk of irritation. For the most part nobody can see that my shave is not 100% BBS and the number of people permitted to fondle my face is extremely limited, so I strive for close and comfortable shaves.
I'm sure the novelty will wear off soon. But for now, since its a new hobby and new toy, I just can't seem to wait till my next shave.
man, talk about soaps. I just got the eucalyptus mint LA shaving soap company soap last week that I'm absolutely loving. I ordered sample sizes of all the scents Mikes Natural Soaps has to offer. super cheap by the way, 13 bucks including shipping. I just ordered about 20 bucks worth of soap from mama bears site. That will probably arrive on friday. CalifornaCajun saw my post asking about different types of soaps so he decided to send me some samples as well. Thats coming in on friday as well. So I have a lot of soaps to keep me busy for a while.
I want to thank CaliforniaCajun for his generosity! I really want to pay that forward to another new member as well. Maybe get a chain going or something. I think I'm going to start a thread in the soaps and creams section once all my soaps come in the mail.
I think the penny dropped for me as previously posted when I did not chase the BBS but sought the comfort from a shave. I am now at a stage with a one pass (albeit repetitive short strokes) I can get a DFS and not worry about the rest. When I have a special occasion I will thin down my lather and then just touch up areas where I can feel stubble. I think newbie’s should always go for comfort over BBS although I do have a thick slow growth and sensitive skin so it rashes easily.
I find if I shave my neck sideways with a "guillotine" motion, I can achieve BBS on my neck, as I won't leave the sink without BBS all over. Kinda' dangerous but it works for me. ;)
Gentlemen,
In my overall shave, and especially on the neck, I strive for comfort over perfect.
