Do real straight razors get as sharp as a shavette?

Thank you, very informative - the picture of the rolled edge in particular.

For those members who may not know: The "Feather Super Pro Artist Club blade" mentioned refers to a blade for the Feather "replaceable blade" (shavette style) straight razor.

That's a fact, John! Shavettes are too 'sharp' for me, out of the box. Don't last long either.
Why would I want to replicate that? (as if I could!:p)

Reading the posts above one would get the impression sharpness is only a matter of edge geometry which is only part of the story. How about steel quality? Carbon steel vs. the alloys and diamond coatings used by Feather or any other commercial razor blade manufacturer.

Ahaaa! Scienceofsharp is Todd, our own fuzzychops! I recognize a series of SEM images. He hasn't posted here in over a year (since Glen ran him off :)) but I see that he visited not long ago.
