Newb back wanting more feedback..
I think I am getting the list narrowed down. If there are any others that anyone knows may meet my parameters please post.
Dovo Bismarck Pearl round point 6/8" swedges
Boker Elite round point 6/8" swedges
Ralf Aust - Solingen round point 6/8" Horn Scales Worked Spine

As far as quality of craftmanship, I would say that your best bet in your list is the Ralf Aust. You can also take a look at the 6/8" razors at Revisor.
No loosers here, they are all winners.
My choice, obviously, is the Boker Elite. Lovely with carbon fibre scales, stunning with the horn scales. Second choice, the Elite. Third, the Elite. ;)

This one has wood scales, fancy swedge, and in 6/8.
I haven't considered wood to this point. Is there reason I should avoid it?
I also noted a lot of three Other Razors for about the price of the Aust, but the swedge was plain and they were 5/8.
Maybe a matching set of two out there somewhere under 250?
Did I say I had until Xmas? Is that going to be enough time?
I have a couple Boker pocket knives and like the idea of heavier. You can get it with horn scales?

Also consider the vendor you choose to supply the razor too, and what their stock availability is.
Possibly, i have never really thought about it before. I think balance would be more important, if the blade is the same and you change the weight of the scales it will affect the balance of the razor. i.e. if the lighter scales provide the best balance then heavier scales would just imbalance the razor.Quote:

the only negative i have heard with regards to spinework is that if it is too angular it can scratch strops, but yes it does look nice and obviously not all spinework will do this, there are a few fixes if it is a problem anyway, gentle sanding or tape are the two that come to mind.
Found it again, spine that goes to an edge. I understand the difference now. I like the edge look going to the spine.

Make mine Ralf Aust. In my experience among current production razors, Revisor is its only competition, and occasionally Thiers-Issard.
In order of preference Aust, Boker, Dovo. No terrible choices here Ymmv.
I can't speak to the Aust or Boker, but my Dovo, while usable, is far inferior to good vintage razors. I'm somewhat disappointed with it.
The way things seem to be going in Razorland these days the Aust nameplate seems to have the most quality to it. That would be my choice.
I have two of your picks and the RA is the most consistent but the Boker is a quality shaver too. I just think RA does a better job of finishing off a razor and then Lynn here on SRD hones them to perfection!
But the Boker in carbon scales is a winner as well. I have a Dovo but not that model.
Ed is right but as long as you don't hammer fist or as I sometime refer to as gorilla fisting and just let the razor's weight be your only real pressure on the strop the marring of the strop is of no real concern, or at least that has been my experience with my worked spine RA like what you are referring to.Quote:

I have Thiers Issard, Boker, and Ralf Aust. My recommendation is the Ralf Aust. You won't be disappointed with the quality.
I was leaning toward the Boker but that Aust looked so nice and matched my preferences so I had to throw it in the poll.
I would have included the Revisor in my poll but didn't know about them at the time.
Looking like very strong support for the Ralf Aust from the folks here.
I will have to research strops next, I think cost with strop will be the determining factor between the Boker and Aust.
