The DMT 325 does it only come in course, or what in your opinion, is the best of the DMT (only) stone to use as a lapping stone for all Naniwa SS, 2k to 10k?
There are extra course, course, fine extra fine, and so on, but the 325 seems to be the one recommended, what is your take on these?
Reason I choose DMT, they seem to be in a good price range, and they are true.
Yes that one is the one to use. I would say it was fine to use but that would be confusing since it is coarse. Just make sure that you use it under running water and use light pressure.
Also knock the corner edges off the DMT with a fine file as they can stand a little proud and mark your hone quite badly.
Yup, that is a workhorse and will work just fine for lapping. As said use lot of water, under running water or in a tub and don’t use excessive pressure, it will clog the diamonds and rip them out of the nickel plating.
Do run some steel on the plate to remove any high diamonds, on DMT the edges do seem to be sharp a file or just sharpen a kitchen knife or two should do it. If you see deep scratches on your stone do it again until smooth.
Taken care of. a DMT should last a lifetime. Scrub it once in a while with cleanser and a stiff brush, I like Barkeepers Friend, let it sit on the plate a few minutes and scrub with a stiff nylon or brass brush, it will revive a plate and unclog the diamonds.
The 325 is a solid workhorse for most any flattening and removal of large amounts of steel in a short time.
I do not use it on razors though, but for working-knives it is a fine starter before going up in grit.
That said, I have worn out a couple of them, so they are by no means indestructible.
Flattening of CF's and other hard rocks will wear it down...:)
