I've watched so many videos that I am on my 4th pair of glasses. I noticed some use short repetitive strokes, others long strokes and I found that a longer stroke works best. A lot depends on the razor I am using. I can do it better with my Kai Captain. Of course the straight razor has to be very sharp. What works best for you?
I prefer the shorter strokes personally. I do do longer strokes sometimes, especially on my head, but I feel you are in more control of the short strokes and less likely to have a major accident if things go wrong.

Shorter strokes as-beginning are safer and tell you a lot as to your mastering of blade angle as a new stroke is begun.
Longer strokes are good for the 1st pass for me, in areas, Yet the rest of the shave definitely has more short strokes.

Ditto to sharptonn, long strokes at first to clear the weeds, then shorter strokes to smooth the sod. Think putting green or bowling lawn, smooth with no divots.
Pretty much all short strokes for me.
Short strokes here, too. May just be that my skills aren't up to snuff but I'm more prone to nicking myself when using longer strokes.
I alternate, and don't really pay attention to the length of stroke most of the time. As long as I pay attention to blade angle, and maintain that through the contours and curves, I don't find that length of stroke makes a whole lot of different for me. YMMV.
Some times I use short strokes and sometimes I use longer strokes. All depends on how the blade is mowing down them whiskers....lol
Short strokes work best when starting out. Easier control.
I almost always use short strokes. When I try to get cute and go for a long stroke bad things happen...
I use very long strokes from top of cheek to bottom of neck. The shave goes very quickly. When I do a touch up pass I use shorter strokes.
For sideburn and cheek areas I use a long stroke; almost everywhere else a short stroke. On chin and jawline I use a buffing stroke, no more than a 1/2 inch, but back and forth, pulling the lather back for the next stroke. Can I still claim a 2 pass shave with that stroke?
I use long strokes for wtg and xtg. Short strokes and scything for last pass atg.
Short strokes seems to work better for me, my beard being coarse is what I assume keeps me from the longs strokes I have tried. Certainly use short strokes with my shavette that sucker bites when I try to go long.
Probably longer strokes on the easy areas and short repetitive strokes on the areas that don't cut so easily.
Medium to short strokes work best for me, and long strokes are scary.

I pretty much use long strokes and scything exclusively at this point. The only time I resort to short strokes is if the razor is telling me it needs a touch up, or I'm trying to get an extra close shave. Some of the trouble areas will get short strokes on the second pass. When I started I was much more meticulous and used short strokes exclusively. All depends on your skill, comfort level, and shave preferences.
Certainly some of the strokes are longer than others, but generally I use short strokes, esp if I go ATG...
i do only long strokes on the side of my face, the rest is short strokes. Why..... look at Jimbo's awnser.
My wife was watching me with the shavette the other day and said, "woah you use really short strokes. You aren't supposed to do that with a straight razor. You are supposed to use longer ones." I will say that I used longer strokes with the straight razor (I only shave my cheeks so top of cheek to bottom) and seem to use shorter with the shavette (maybe 5 strokes or so from top to bottom and then kind of clean up strokes where hairs are missed or I am watching my lines). I burned the devil out of my face with the shavette doing that. I think too many short strokes were covering the same ground as the last one.
I really need to work on my shavette usage. However, it felt more natural to do short with it and felt more natural to do longer ones with the regular straight razor. No idea why.
For me, long strokes down the cheeks and short strokes around the neck. Controlled speed. All on the straight.
I've gotten away with using long strokes, however, if something goes wrong, it's going to go VERY wrong. I cut my earlobe like that once, and it bled profusely for hours. On the other hand, with short strokes, you're applying the blade to your skin more often.

I use long stroke on the WTG.
A bit shorter on the XTG and even shorter strokes on ATG.
Don't relly know why, but thats how it evolved.
