So -- all these years of shaving with straights and the last year and half or so of restoring and honing straights - I've never cut my hands. Until today - so tip of the week: if you accidentally drop your straight, don't try and catch it...

It's a hard reaction to stop but anyone who works with sharp things, heavy things, or hot things will learn. In addition to not trying to catch it, you learn to get your feet out of the way too. Just last week I knocked a kitchen knife off the counter- it landed point down sticking straight out of my floor right where my foot was! Good thing I moved quickly.

Nice clean cut - odd place on the underside of my ring finger. I caught it and it closed on the finger - only thing I can think of but I don't remember because it happened so fast. I remember saying sh#t and then the sting as the blade sliced in. Bled pretty good - wrapped it up tight with two bandaids and went to work. It was a near wedge too- nice and heavy! Got the "your an idiot" look from the wife but she didn't say anything - they don't have to of course all you married guys know that.
Hopefully next time I'll jump back and think good thoughts...

I know that look well! Few days ago I cut my finger on a coffee can lid and when my wife saw the band-aid on there she gave me the look. I knew her first thought was "razor...idiot". I think she still doesn't 100% believe it was the coffee can.
i've often thought of that and have decided that i'm going to catch one if i drop it because cuts will heal but broken razors won't. i guess i value my razors more than my flesh.
I have dropped a few. My reaction is get out of the way. I have not had any break or cut myself from a falling razor. I have many times cut myself doing other things with razors. If you play with sharp edges you will get cut.:chop:
I haven't dropped one yet. But, just in case I do, I always shave with underwear on to keep private parts from hanging in the way of a falling razor!
I'm the same way- get out of the shower and eager for the shave, but wait- put some unders on 1st.
Also, never fry bacon naked.

If I had shoes on I would probably try to break it's fall with my feet, other wise I would let it fall. I cut myself bad with a kitchen knife once and put myself out of being a guitar player for 6 weeks. I'm not doing that again
Yeah, there are some things you just don't catch. But it's funny how the brain registers things. Heavy things and hot things I will get out of the way quick-fast. But I'm just too comfortable with sharp objects I guess and I haven't quite learned to dodge rather than catch a razor. It'll probably take a nice slice like that to teach me better, and I'm honestly surprised I haven't gotten that lesson yet.Quote:

I worked with heavy, shiny, hot, spinning, and sharp stuff most of my life. I learned early that I wanted to count to 21 at bed time.
