It depends on your neck. With a big fat neck you can use more of an angle and a more pronounced scything stroke. If you have a narrow and concave neck it gets dicey.

No, I didn't say you're a gorilla
har har.
A straight blade is impossible for me to get the hollows on each side of the Adams Apple. My slight smiling W&B helps, but it's still tough. A spike and I'm leaving DNA. My best bet is to stretch the hell out of the skin upwards, then go chin to ear. My off hand finger tips start at or slightly under the jaw line, then pull up and back, so I can get as much skin above my jawline.
My biggest pain in the arse is the dead center on the Adams Apple. I wear a goat-T, so nothing under the chin. But the crown of the Apple, I can only go UP. No matter how slight of an angle, I can't keep from tugging...not on hair, but the chicken skin tiny bumps. I usually have to (don't ban me from the forums)...cheat and use my DE. :nono:
I use a diagonal stroke that works very well.
Does SRD sell clam shells?
I do a south pass, then a north pass. Since most of my neck hair grows west to east, my final pass is at an angle from NE to SW. I make the angle as close to sideways as I can, which isn't much, but it gets close enough for BBS. No need to go straight across.
I also have trouble XTG on my neck. Admit to a quick XTG pass with a DE razor to clean things up. Purist ? No, but doing the best I can.
It is and will always be a a pain in the neck.
