My first SR shave

Tonight was long anticipated. I had drempt of a sharp blade gliding across my face. After getting my razors back from Eric, I locked myself in the bathroom and began the ritual. After hearing my fave m oiling it, reheating, hot brush and cream. The Shumate was first. Switched to the L, F & C. And then reality set in. I didn't know the mechanics of it. Figuring out the angle, length of stroke, WTD, XTD! The exhaustion of it all lol.

Stopped halfway through just to watch videos. I was able to finish w/o cutting to bad, just a couple nicks. I may figure this out after all.

Sounds like yours was successful and you are well on your way.
Do watch videos. Our founder Lynn Abrams has a learn to shave video that is a must watch.
Practice strokes that you think might work for you with a butter knife.
Take your time and stay in your comfort zone.
This takes dedication, time and a lot of practice. In the end it will be well worth the effort.

Yeah, that is true, im starting to get to the 100 count I think. I have figured out the angels for wtg atg and xtg. Also starting to get a real comfortable shave. First few times I had to rest my face for a few days. Now I can shave every day if I want. Increasing the speed to get that first perfect shave!

Shaving with a straight razor requires some skill. Learning that skill takes some time. Don't try to rush through the learning process.

Think back to the time you learned how to drive a car. You probably started off driving around an empty parking lot, or perhaps driving around the block. You did not try to get out on a busy highway your first time behind the wheel. So take it easy; do as much as your level of skill permits. Then as your skill level improves, you will soon find you are up to speed on the shaving highway.

Do not forget that shaving requires multiple skills. Do not neglect any of them in your learning process. You need to be proficient using your razor to shave. You also need to be able to build a slick, protective lather with a good soap or cream and a decent brush. You also need to be proficient in stropping your razor to maintain a keen, yet smooth edge. It may take several months to master these skills, but the reward is great.

Although it is not necessary, many of us also enjoy learning the skill of honing our own razors so we can produce edges that best suit our own face, beard, and shaving preferences.

Expect the first 2 weeks to be challenging.

Good for you! I've only been at it about 3 mounths my self. My be 35 shaves and I still get a nick about every 3rd shave. Like every body says take your time and go slow. Don't give up. It's only been the last 3 or 4 shaves that I've been able to compleatley do my chin with the sr. Have fun with it.
