First post in a long time...
Been a long time since I have been on here so figured I would jump on and post what’s been going on...
Started shaving with a straight about a year ago or so and enjoyed it. Had some ups but a lot of downs figured I would step back and got myself a DE to learn pressure and angle (also for the times when I didn’t have enough time to use a straight and that’s when I would really get into trouble anyways so figured make it am easier on myself).
I now have 3 DE razors and 5 Straights and can shave well with all of them. Every now and then the blade reminds me who is boss but it’s never anything other than a small weeper so I count that as a win.
Recently the acquisition bug hit me and I went on a buying spree of soaps, pre and post shave items and while I was at it decided to buy some Hones (figured why not).
Well the other day after watching hours of YouTube honing videos I decided it was time to try it. So I took out the hones lapped them smooth took out my first straight I purchased (old vintage straight purchased from whipped dog and figured I would give it a go. Started on the 1K, then the 5K, 8K and finished on the 12K. From there hit the strop then shaved...for the first time honing I was happy...definitely need some more work but I was able to get 3 full passes and only 1 small nick.
What have I learned over this journey so far? Don’t rush, if you don’t have the time to dedicate to a straight shave then use the DE or skip it for the day. Watch the pressure and blade angle. Good prep and a great lather along with a good moisturizing aftershave should never be overlooked. And above all else have fun with it.
