Default Scale position to decease razor bite

A mistake tightening a hinge pin ( cracked scale)caused me to try shaving under my chin with straight scale. The results were grabby WTG even after meny laps on the strop. So I tried scale open 90 degrees from closed on another razor and it was as smooth as I could hope for WTG.

Do others use the scale so gravity pulls the edge away from skin? For example a barber shaving someone lying down with the scale open 270.

    Thanks
    Matt

Open 270 degrees is the standard position for shaving.
Only a few strokes are done with the razor in the straight (180 degrees) position.
At least this is how I do it.

I typically shave with the scales pointing 90° from the spine.

Actually... Like this. It covers wtg, atg, xtg.

It depends on what part of my face I’m shaving. A fair bit of my shave is done with the scales straight back and the rest is like in the picture that Mike showed.

I shave with the scales straight back most of the time.

I am not a barber and have never shaved someone else. I can certainly see how that would change things like how you hold tha razor.

Although I don't disagree with that thinking and style since I am not a barber I do what fits me and my face in a mirror and not what their manuals say.

All grips, are modified grips, of the basic grip. I use several different grips, tailored for my own use, that are comfortable for me to use.

If I even get the slightest feeling that I don't have complete control of the razor, I cease all use, till I do. Once I'm comfortable with it I can modify it from there, for other areas of my face. But I'm also a dominate hand, shaver. So you'll have that.

I pretty much always used the basic grip except when I did south-north on my neck. Then I used closer to that pinch grip.

Basic grip most of the time, pinch ATG on the neck, I do hold it scales 180° going XTG on the cheeks.
