It never occurred to me to take stones with me on trips even though some of those lasted close to four weeks.

I took two (preferably stainless steel) straights and a strop.
If I should have become careless and dinged one, I still would have had the other one. Thankfully I never did.
The other alternative was to travel with a Feather Artist Club (AC) straight and a pack of Pro or Super Pro blades.

I prefer to travel light and would not want to burden myself with too much gear and also felt that I worked more relaxed and more precise when honing at home.

When you all feel grit on the stone do you just Wash it again and keep going or do you think about starting again with the refresh? The 4 k stone felt a bit more gritty and the 8 k never got as smooth as home under dripping water. Next time I will try sitting in the car with the windows up and misting everything before starting.
    Any thoughts?
I told ya it was dry n dusty. Skin and hair is a little tougher because of it.

I never imagined that the outside conditions would have that big an impact on honing. Guess it’s because I have always done the deed inside or on my back porch where it never gets overly hot and dusty. Makes sense though.

I thinkmuch of it is from the change of positioning. Set up your camping chair in the middle of your living room and try to hone. It would work of course but I think your first few tries would not be your best just from being in a different environment and position.

Interesting idea about honing posture; it seems worth investigating.

So I'm out for another camping trip. Day one shave with a razor honed and stropped the night before was tough: lots of tugging and I finished the shave with a different razor.

I was thinking that I might be spending less time with lather on my face then at home. On Day two shave I kept my face latherd while I made breakfast then stropped and shaved. It felt like shaving at home! A long shave prep helps.

You do have to soften up your beard and lubricating the skin before you try to slice the whiskers off. Otherwise, you’ll just be yanking them out as the edge grabs the hair.
