2 for me, I'm not a BBS junkie but I get darn close with 2.
2.5 here also...
Working on the stereo speakers for the shave den.
I have gone to a four pass shave.
1st pass is super light, just reducing whiskers, WTG
2nd is also light, still reducing whiskers, WTG
3rd I start getting close to the skin, WTG
and the fourth is clean up ATG & XTG where needed
This light multiple passes are really working. I get real BBS with absolutely no irritation or burn. :tu

I'm a BBS junkie and OSD sufferer (Obsessive Shaving Disorder :o ). A bit like Steve, I have to do a 4th pass to make sure (usually on chin area) to get that absolutely squeaky smooth shave. Most of the time I get no burn, but sometimes that 4th pass can feel a little aggressive in patches.
I keep telling myself I'm going to try the 2-pass method this time, but...
2.5 passes for me, generally. News on weekdays, music on weekends, although, unlike Jlander, no vinyl or reel-to-reel. Mine's all digitized in FLAC.
I'm for the second approach--two passes and get it smooth enough.
Any more, and my skin will hurt for awhile.
Three passes. No candles, no music, no distractions, no blood, no styptic pencil.

I do two passes every day. Some days I go for BBS but if I can'tdo that every day it makes my sking too sensetive.
One pass is good enough with a regular razor in my rotation.
When I'm honing up new (old) razors to test, I will do up to three passes with up to four razors.
These marathons are reserved for slow work days.
Till it is perfect:y
