Finally found a use for a Zeepk kit!

Doc, Nickelking and I were were BSing in the chat last night and I was regaling them with tales of woe concerning the Zeepk kit my poor unsuspecting wife purchased for me for Christmas. After the compulsory jokes about letter opening and what not, Doc came up with what I thought was a brilliant idea. He suggested that I grind off the edge of the razor and give the kit to the kids as a kind of "Daddy's Little Shaver" thing... Well I did just that and the oldest of my sons and I just spent a FANTASTIC half hour together in the bathroom. I even took some (poorly executed) pictures of the fun.

Now if I can just get him to clean under his fingernails and keep them trimmed we are set! Bruce is eleven... is brothers Lars (10) and Leif (6) had a good "first shave" too. Anyhow... if you are a reluctant member of the sad fraternity of Zeepk owners, here is an option for you other than tossing it in the trash.

That is really great!!! And hey, if you teach him how to handle the razor now, by the time he has some whiskers he will be great at it.

Gotta say, that looks like great fun. I'm sure you're teaching him the proper stopping technique, but that angle on the shave looks rather steep!

I had the same idea myself (my daughter is almost 3 ys old and she shaves with a plastic spoon).
The reason I didn't was that I want her to know that ALL razors are dangerous.
I am not going to confuse her with a 'safe' razor.

Be sure your son understands this as well, because that zeepk will be very fogiving wrt pressure and angle.
So when he starts shaving for real (don't know when that would be) he might have picked up a couple of bad habits already.

But I really think it is a great idea, and I think it is great that you teach your son to shave like a man.

It was great fun... yes the angles are all wrong but today was all introduction so we can work out the fine points later. Bruno, I totally understand where you are coming from on the confusion with "safe" and regular razors. With a house full of five kids safety is always a concern. Before I neutered it, the razor was locked in my gunsafe with all the firearms where all my razors will be kept (as much for the razors protection as for the kids). On that same note, I firmly believe that the best way to keep kids safe around things like farm equipment, firearms, tools and razors is to teach them to respect them, not fear them, and to eliminate the mystery surrounding them as that is usually the draw of the mystery that puts children in perilous situations with dangerous items.

The Zeepk is roughly the same sharpness as a butter knife so poor technique is, at this point, not too dangerous. If my sons strike me as responsible enough to be safe and take good care of their equipment then I will certainly train them in the proper use and care of a straight and they can start shaving with one as soon as they think they are ready. (No straights for idiot teenagers seems like a pretty good rule). Good thing I have about four years before the first one hits shaving age so I have some time to work on my own technique or it would be the blind leading the blind. There is also Lynn's DVD which I am sure will come in useful when we hit that stage.

Although it kinda freaked me out at first cuz I looked at the pictures without reading the post. Whew!!

I would like to teach my daughter to shave her legs with a straight when she gets of age (She's only 7 months!).:) :)

That's freakin' awesome.

The worst thing you can do with kids is hide/lockup something with the belief that it will keep them safe. That just makes them that much more curious and determined to get to it. While I would not leave something dangerous within arm reach of a youngster, I would not try to hide it either. Teach them to respect the item for what it is and even handle it if it can be done safely. Once the mystery is removed, they become much less interested in whatever it is. My 7 year old likes to watch me shave on occasion and hone the razor, or knife but he knows not to touch and what the consequences of his actions would be. They have to be taught to respect the danger of an object, respect others, obey authority figures and take responsibility for their action. That is why they call us parents, unfortunately far too few parents rule the children and far too many children rule the parents.

But back to the subject at hand, that is pretty cool idea. I will have to remember that when my son get closer to the shaving age.

now that might just be a reason to buy a zeepk, or 2 in my case. luckily i have a few years on this also.

I'll have a chance to work on my straight technique before my son is old enough to shave. Though only two and a half, he uses my Mach III travel case to shave with. Its time spent with him and passing on manly knowledge.

I'll have to agree with cannonfodder about respecting and not fearing objects. If you introduce items (razors, weapons, etc) early, and teach proper respect for those items, the curiosity for the items will greatly decrease. There will be less of a chance of being hurt or worse from sneaking around with such items.

Enjoy the time spent, as well you might know, the time flies.

Looks like fun, wish my dad did that for me. I had to find out about shaving all by myself (started electric, then went to Quattro, now sometimes a DE just for the fun of it, straight's next).
You'll just have to tell him to go light on the pressure. He's pushing the blood out of his thumb while stropping, that can't be good.

And I think I'm NOT going to show this to my GF. She's seriously allergic to dirty fingernails. :D

Also kudos on the respect thing. When I was about seven my father bought me a BB gun and gave me a long lecture on safety concerns, complete with possible negative outcomes from not following them. I was only allowed to use it under supervision and any mistake I made (other than just plain old poor marksmanship) was quickly corrected under threat of not being allowed to use it any more. He bought me an archery kit around the same time under the same circumstances. I started shooting the .22 rimfire around 10 or so, shooting skeet around 12.

Some people when I tell them that think it was very irresponsible to put a gun in my hands at that age, but I knew the risks and was always supervised. And you know what? I never once felt the need to play with a gun, or mess around for my friends. I grew up almost fanatical about gun safety. I'm one of those annoying people that will shout over to you to open up your action when you're walking up to me, or remind you that anything but a steep downwards angle while holding a gun is unsafe while walking (heh, this one has caused some agruments in the past, but come on, cradling the gun and having it point straight to the left or right, you can get shooting the breeze and wind up turing to say things and so on, then bam, muzzle is pointing right at someone. Shoulder carries drive me nuts too, in fact, there is one person I refuse to hunt with anymore because they were ahead of me on a trail with their rifle over their shoulder pointing back at me, and when I asked them to change it, they argued it was empty :nono:)

I'm getting off topic though... Basically, learning proper safety at a young age, I think is the best way to make sure the many rules get locked in your head from your impressionable age and by the time you're ready to go out and do it yourself, the how, why and what could happen is already locked in your head.
