I asked this same question to my Grandmother- inlaw whos husband ran 2 shops from the 50's to 2004 and he still used the Henckles,Boker and Antalope till he closed the doors in 04. She told me" MOST barbers stoped using them because of lawsuits from people claming they had goten Aids", Was her exact words. The razors were still shave ready when he passed.

I'm surprised no one has asked about the honemeisters here and elsewhere who test shave the razors they hone for others before shipping them off... Are they being sanitized? Just wondering... You guys have all mentioned ideas here and there along the lines of a business I wish to open here in Dallas. Google "Boardroom Salon" and you'll see a great example of a place that is bringing the straight shave back in. I called one location and the airheaded girl on the phone seemed to err on the side of caution and *guess that all of the straight shaves were done with disposibles. Anyway, check it out. By the way, the Boardroom is franchising locations left and right. Bring one to your hometown if you want a str8 shave on a regular basis (the "traditional" as they call it runs between $50 and $60). If you have 350-500,000 dollars just lying around, I'm sure you can manage to own and operate a franchise.

I'm pretty sure I recall reading that they are sanitized

I know that I sanitize the ones I do before I oil them up and send them back.

The Boardroom thing is a good idea, but their prices are kinda out of this world LOL

I like the idea of having your own place, similar, but set your own prices. I do like the idea of a smoking club where a guy can go to relax, have a drink and get a nice shave

Of course you'd have to find the right demographic for it to work...

In VA, I believe Barbers must use disposable straight blades to straight shave their clients or do hair shaping.

Its a challenging idea for me today to allow a barber to straight shave me since I get such awesome results shaving myself. It would have to be someone really good at it to sway me and I have yet to meet one.

    Someday is it will happen.

After I hone a razor, I will test shave, after that it gets rubbed down with an alcohol pad and a lite coat of oil.

All the barbers here in the UK who use straights all use the shavette type razors with half a DE blade in them.

You could probably bring in your own razor and ask them to use it, but the chances are they'd say no.

They use what they have to use and they cant change it. Health and safety and the fear of being sued..!

We bring out own shave ready razors, soap and brush to the local barber and he is more than happy to give Joed a "real" shave. Otherwise he will use his hot lather machine and a shavette. He really likes being able to use the "proper" tools to do the job.

    My dear CarrieM:

Maybe there is still hope for civilization where a barber likes to use the "proper" gentlemanly tools.

Many years ago, the last time I visited a real barber when some hair graced my dome, I pointed to his straight razor and hanging strop and said, "I'd love to use a straight razor." He shook his head and frowned. "Too hard," he said.

I haven't not been to his barbershop since life sneezed on my head and blew away the hair, but I can safely assume that he no longer even displays the real straight razor and the hanging strop. He probably has a straight razor with replaceable blades parked in some sanitizing container, and that he uses the razor only to clean up the hairline on the back of the neck.

Ah well, nothing is sacred anymore.

    Regards,

    Obie
