The business end of a spike point is not something you want to see a hunk of your face on. I learned this soon after my little ducks arrived today. I thought I was being super extra careful… right up until I filleted my check. A bit more training with the tortoise and I’ll wrestle the dwarf again.
I hear you brother. I have one of those faces that are just not meant for a spike....<sigh>. There's just too many areas where I have to dig in with the tip of the blade rather than the heel so I'm pretty much limited to square points instead. Still, I love the look of spikes and I even have one but it rarely comes out to play and if it does, I need a square or round point backup to get at those trouble spots unless I'm willing to settle for less than almost perfect.

I haven't used a spike point yet but I just ordered one of the founder's razor's from classic shaving and the point on it in the picture looks a little intimidating. It'll be on it's way to Lynn for honing before I get it, just ordered it a few days ago.

all I can say is don't let the point get out of sight. I made one pass down the check and thought man this is one smooth shaver, then the red began to seep out. Never felt the cut but is a pretty good one, the worst I've had so far.
You can dull any needle tip by drawing the tip, point down across an ultra fine hone, but yeah, always know where every mm of the business edge of your razor at all times.

Well, I too, have felt the inadvertent sting of an ill-tended spike point. But hey, chicks dig scars, right??;)
My Geneva is a spike point, and I read enough about the dangers that I've kept it straight along the face or pointing out on rounded areas. It's worked well so far, and I've even been able to use it for some precision stuff around the sideburns and goatee (when I had it).
What I DON'T have is a round point. Love to get one soon, though.
I get little nicks from a round tip, I can't imagine how much of a butcher job I'd do if I had a spike point!
I shaved with it a couple more times with much better results than the first. You have got to watch that dang tip the whole time or its going to find somewhere to snag.
Once you get accustomed to a spike it can be a precise and handy tool in your arsenal.
There isn't a hair out there that can escape a good spike point.

i prefer a spike. i have a lot of precision work from my mustache, goat and sideburns and i find it very difficult to get a good clean job done with a round point.
if you loose track of it, it will bite you in a heartbeat though!
The true spike points definitely require extra attention. I opt for anything other than a spike point if I feel that the shave for the day is a going to a bit more quick and casual.
I feel that leading the razor with the toe helps me when shaving with a spike point. It allows me to keep the spike point always on my face with minimal pressure.
I found myself getting less scary results leading with the heel and keeping the spike off the face. It seems that you still get the same scything motion as with the toe leading but with a little better control. Maybe with a little more confindence I will try toe first.Quote:

Sometimes I think what we learn on is what we get comfortable with. When I got my first razor I didn't know this place existed and did not know a spike from a round. As a result my first razor was a spike and I didn't know enough to be afraid of it. So I learned and did get a nick here and there but think the learning curve on the spike was better just because I didn't get nervous about the point. I just thought that was how they were made. so I guess my point is when we make a big deal about spikes I think maybe we scare and make some of the new guys more worried which in turn makes it harder to learn. all you really need to understand is that all razors can cut you, show them all the same respect and you will be fine.
I agree. All razors demand respect and your full attention or their going to get you.
