The Illustrated Guide to making Uberlather

Here is my best attempt at putting together an actual guide to making Uberlather:


Start the process with a sink full of hot water, soak your lather bowl, and brush, in the water.

The next step, is the only variable step in the process, you have to soak the soap in hot water also, how much water depends only on your brush, I am using a Shavemac 28mm Silvertip so I start with about 1/4 inch of hot water on the soap. It is better to start with less water than more, as it is easier to add a bit, than take it away (just dribble water at the base of the bristles with your fingers)Set this to the side..

Place a Snurdle of shave cream in the warm bowl about almond size (no you don't need a Snurdle Dipper you can just use your finger)

Add 4-5 drops of Pure Glycerin to the shave cream and place the bowl back in the sink full of hot water...

Add the soapy water to the lather bowl and set it back in the sink to warm

Shake out your brush to almost dry, and load the soap onto the brush, it should be sticky, and thick, the brush should get clumpy with soap (1 min)

Swirl the brush tips around the lather bowl mixing the cream, glycerin, and water together first, then mash the brush into the mixture.. The brush should absorb almost all the mixture leaving behind just a small amount of suds...

Start whisking and pumping the brush to build the lather this next picture is not lather it is still just foam...

We are almost there now the foam is starting to get creamy and thick becoming lather now!!!!

This is Uberlather notice the creamy peaks off the brush it really should look like whipped cream.... Total time from start to finish 5 min...

Ahhhhh shave time now!!!!!! One other hint make sure your face is good and wet before you lather up it really does help....

Holy moly, that is a lot more steps than what I do but I'll bet it produces some pretty incredible lather!

I must confess, at first I thought it may just be a product of using more soap/cream. But after using this method for over a month, I can honestly say, I will keep using this method as It consistently produces excellent results.

And your lather bowl looks a bit like a cognac snifter. So, you put a snurdle in your snifter, then set it back adrift?:confused:

Ahhhhh the great "Snurdle Dipper Thread" this came from a thread from another site and then got even funnier over here but was lost in the great crash...

Greats stuff Glen. I'd read and wondered about Uberlather, and this is exactly what I needed to clarify things. Got some Gold Dachs soap, Erasmic shave cream (cheap, but I've heard it's good) and some glycerine, and I'll be giving it a try tonight. I'll post how I get on.

Regarding the glycerin. Is that vegetable glycerin? I'd prefer pork glycerin if that would be acceptable.:D

I prefer "ultra-mega-alpha-apex lather". It takes 20 minutes and 14 products to make it, but it's a real treat! :w

Seriously though, I'm glad it works for you, but I just don't get the whole superlather/uberlather thing. Regular ol' shave soap with a brush and water does just fine for me!

This post is absolutely NOT ment as a sarcastic post, but is this Überlather? I always thought that my lather (which was like the lather in the pictures) was too thin and that it should be slicker. Therefor i used more soap/cream, but maybe i was just using too much soap/cream then? Because when i lather up nowadays, the lather dries quite fast. Does this stay wet?

Each soap / cream / brush combo, has it's own water ratio..... That really is the only variable in making lather.... Oh Christ somebody is gonna get technical and add the temperature and the hardness of the water in there, but that is going to be pretty consistent at your sink in your house...

Getting the water ratio for shaving correct is not half the battle it is the whole battle... If you don't want to use "Uberlather" itself, as we have seen some people just don't get it.... using the technique on the soap is a method all in itself that is called the "Safe method" for creating lather, only adding water to the base of the bristles will help your lather, there are quite a few tricks wrapped up inside the thread if you wanted to break it down...
Lather is a personal preference mine is to make the creamiest, richest, slickest most comfortable lather I can.... This does not mean that I have to spend tons of $$$$ doing it either, notice I did not say what soaps or creams I was using, it really didn't matter, I can whip together an Uber at the Gym every morning made out of Williams and Edge cream that costs pennies to make and shaves great.... or I can indulge myself and use CF cream and TOBS Milled soap..... the choice is yours!!!!!

Seriously though, I have heard of this new stuff..... It comes in a can, and you can just put it on your face and eliminate the brush and soap too.... :w

I ubered up this morning and had a great shave! The only issues for me is that I hate to throw so much lather away after the shave. I Always seen to get about 4 times as much later as I can use at on time.

This is how you make yer lady happy too at the same time and eliminate that lather waste and let her use the rest to shave her legs with :D

Kinda off topic but have you noticed any damage from soaking your whole brush in really hot water? I always try to keep the very base away from the water to the glue doesn't weaken. :shrug:

Not so far, but that brush is only 8 months old....

I will have to try this on my next shave. It looks like it is going to be great. Looks a lot better than my normal lather.

ok,, I need some help with lather. I've been following some good directions (I think). I cover the soap (Colleen's) with hot water, soak the brush, and get my scuttle warm for a few minutes. I dump the water off the soap, shake/squeeze out the bristles, and load the brush from the soap. I move over to the scuttle and swish a bit before adding water. I get a good amount of lather without using much soap, but the problem I'm having is the lather isn't slick at all. I try all different amounts of water and it doesn't seem to get slicker at all (I'm using bottled water as well). I get anywhere from dry to soup.

I'd love to try this uber technique, but unfortunately I'm deployed to the sandbox and there aren't a lot of shops around here. One easy question is, what do the peaks of lather look like when the lather is about right? Are they sharp/sturdy, or are they about to fall due to holding a lot of water. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

I have not tried the soap you are using, but it sounds like it is glycerine based.

A good lather is thick and doesn't dry on the skin. You should not be able to see the skin through the layer of lather.

If the lather is too thin, you will see your skin.

The usual problem is too much water on the soap or brush.

It's simple. You put water on the soap and rub the soap with the brush until the soap makes a nice thick lather. It's like whipping a fluffy cream, if you don't whip hard enough or long enough it will not thicken.

If after all your efforts, you can not get a thick lather, try another soap. Many glycerine soaps are thin.

Colleen"s soap will lather just fine, go back and read the "soap" part of this thread.... Drop the rest of the instructions out, and just use the soap part, that should do the trick.... These instructions can be broken down for each type of lather, you don't have to make Uberlather from them, just use the parts that pertain to what yer doing....

Great thread, I was wondering what "Uberlater" was and how it was made :) (need some glycerine now)

I am glad I found this thread.. having a subpar cream and soap this makes a world of difference and allows me to have a nice shave while cleaning out the "crap" so it stops taking up space.
