1st shave with self honed razor!

I just shaved with my first ever self honed razor! (and self restored) And it went quite well.
Used a norton 4k/8k and stropped on paste then leather. I had a back up straight ready if it wasnt good enough to finish the job but it breezed through with no irritation. (Im very proud) :D
I actually went to the 1k first to re align the edge. Im so chuffed, been thinking about it through the day smiling to myself.

Cant i now call my self something .... cant remember what the other guys have said when they got to this stage, to shave with a self honed razor ... :)

Any way to much pride is a bad thing so ill shut up, just wanted to let you guys know, and thanks for ALLLLLL the help from SRP!

Nice job Buckler. I want to do the same, but do it in baby steps. I am bidding on one right now that claims to be stained only. I want to be able to polish the blade and scales, then send it off to a honemeister to put a proper edge on it. I already own a variable speed Dremel type tool. This week I'll be buying a paddle strop and some diamond paste to re-polish the edge on my current one. Next I want to get a coticule/Chinese polishing stone. After that will be the 4000/8000 honing stone. I don't think I want to go the route of complete restoration of a bad blade and scales replacement. We'll see. I want to learn without a lot of upfront expenses. I want to build up the tools over time.

Very nice razor - congratulations! And yes, honing a razor without beating it to pulp is a satisfying experience, is it not? ;)

Yes it is a real sense of satisfaction, the next step is the first time you hone a bad/damaged blade back to shave ready.....
I remember my first bad frown on a razor from e-bay that I fixed and shaved with the next morning, a Fabyan "Electro" turning that frown upside down and shaving with it, was almost as good as the first one I ever honed.....

Ha, Thats great! Its funny, i feel much more comfortable with the opposite. :)
I restored an old one first, then restored another one, then bought a Norton 220/1000 and 4k/8k and shaved of the 8k. Once i can hone well enough to shave with a consistently decent razor of an 8k, then ill get a polishing stone. :)
Isnt it funny how people are different.

Cool, that was my goal before i started straight shaving (i think wayyyy ahead)
I wanted to be able to shave well with a str8, to be able to hone for others, and to be able to GIVE a good str8 shave... im not good enough to do that yet but in a month or two... well see. Ill post it if i give somone a shave. (Ill get the Mrs to photograph it)

Thanks mate, it is sooo satisfying, iv been repeating how good it is to my friends and house mates :D

Do you have befor and after pics of this one you did?
Its funny I thought the next step for me was to make a razor out of a piece of metal (I have done a restore with made scales, its in 'workshop' forum).
But now, thanks to you guys, I have two closer achievable goals first; to shave somone else, and to restore a really beat up one. Yeah!
The ones iv restored so far are just rusty, I havnt found any razors that have bad chunks out of them or any thing.

Well done lad. You're on your way to saving yourself a heck of a lot of hassle with having to send razors out to be sharpened.

Good Job overcoming the Learning Curve. This task is tough to master. You now know why we submit ourselves to frustration, depression, and anger in order to do something as basic as shaving without buying ready-made throw-away contrivances. No electricity needed. Think back and remember how essential the experience has been for personal accomplishment. Shaving with a piece of steel that has been restored (recycled) into something worthwhile and efficient is a DIPLOMA.. We learn what patience and goal-directed behavior is all about. Forums on this great site provide information and foster teamwork. Learning something difficult is true contentment. Now it is time to pursue the perfect razor, perfect hone, perfect strop, and all that...Ain't this a lot of fun now?
