Using 2 str8s 4 1 shave: the disease progresses

I have a little German 9/16" quarter-hollow spike that I don't like very much. The only good thing about it is that it's very accurate & small & is a good edging tool. But it IS very good at that.

My latest buy (and new fave razor) is a massive 15/16 W&B wedge with an extreme smile that wraps all the way around the toe. It's so gigantic & heavy that it plows through anything* with no resistance whatsoever. However, I have some fairly complicated facial hair (like Chuck Liddell), and it is difficult to shape it properly with the big W&B.

Then I had an idea: I own both razors, by god why not USE both razors? Do WTG & ATG with the W&B, then the water-only touch-up pass (including edging) with the little spike.

So now I'm using two razors every time I shave. Anybody else do this, or have I hit a new level of fanaticism here at SRP?

I have a 9/8 Greaves and Sons that I often use for the first two passes then I use a 6/8 Joseph Rogers for the cleanup. You are not alone!

All I can say is you are both very sick people. I would say more but I have to go shampoo my 6 shave brushes.

lol. Oh the irony. I would consider using more than one razor per shave if not for two things.

1. I prefer to work my technique with every razor so that I can shave with anything (that is sharp)
2. I prefer not to spend that much time stropping

Hell, I do it all the time when I am honing/restoring razors. I keep one of my "gold standard" razors for 1/2 of the face, and then test the other half with the refurbished razor, just to make sure the new one is up to par.

I cannot speak for anyone else, but I use a 3/8ths Puma for the coup de maître sometimes.

Only two :confused: ? I use three :D . 6/8 for the first pass , 5/8 for the second , and a 4/8 for upper/lower lip , and any touch ups . What else would you expect from people who are crazy enough to shave with straightrazors ;) .

The sad part is that I am not laughing... Instead, scratching my chin and thinking, maybe I can use that 4/8 after all... :hmmm:

Yep! I do it, too.

I have found that some of my edges are better suited to do ATG than others, yet some struggle with the 1st pass, but perform well after the 1st pass. So, lately I have been using two (for now). Usually a heavy blade that seems best suited for the 1st pass, which goes really well, then one of my "comfortable shave" razors to do the clean up and ATG passes. Of course, there are the "Super" shavers that do both really well......

It's interesting the different personalities and characteristics of our different razors.

* I have a few really nice framebacks, and besides being good shavers in general, they are, also, very good shavers to do the duty of 2nd shaver that does ATG & clean up. The nature of the blade + the rounded heel & toe, seem to lend itself to doing this secondary job very well. :shrug:
