Appreciation for a sharp razor...

Hey all,

So for the past week or so I've just been using one razor each night, a Dovo. I was getting great shaves out of it, and it was shaving very smoothly. But tonight I decided to pick up my Wade and Butcher, one I haven't used in a while. It was honed, but obviously not to the same extent the Dovo was, cause it pulled a lot! That's when I realized that was exactly how my very first few shaves were.... I can't believe I actually thought that was how a straight razor was supposed to feel!!:nono: So I've realized the difference between a razor that simply shaves (but tugs a lot), and one that is honed well. A BIG difference.

So I think we all need to bow and heads and say a little prayer in appreciation of our extra sharp razors. We take them for granted....

Yep, a sharp razor works really well.

Can't beat a well honed razor......

I think that if it isn't sharp, it's useless. I can purchase a throwaway razor that's "sharp" and doesn't pull.

But we tend to forget this when we use a straight and blame ourselves for poor technique etc.,etc.,

In truth, some straight razors are difficult to make sharp. Some modern razors are built to a poor quality of finish. Some of the soaps and creams don't provide glide or dry on the face or provide little protection. Some razors you can purchase arrive blunt. It's a minefield.

But once you know the pitfalls and what to look for, its very special, soothing and rewarding.

Sounds like the DOVO hit the spot for you.

And the difference between truly sharp and pulling isn't all that much - it's amazing how finicky those edges are - not sharp enough: pulls. 5 laps more on the 8k and a few on the coticule: perfect. A few too many laps on either: overhoned!

Whenever I put razor to stone, I always say a little prayer!

The old TV sports show Wide World of Sports used to start of with a guy saying,"The thrill of victory or the agony of defeat". I feel one way or the other after taking an ebay special from the hones on to the shave. :) Of course I don't give up until I get it but sometimes it is a long hard road.
