I can get a very good shave with 1 WTG pass, but I have never got to a point where a second XTG or ATG would not make the shave even closer. If I want the absolute best shave then I need to do more than one pass. YMMV depending on your beard, razor, and experience but this has been my experience.

Prolly obvious but are you keeping the blade fairly flat ? A wide angle will scrape & abrade.
Also is the edge smooth as well as sharp ? Maybe more polishing or stropping. Have you tried a few passes on CrO &/or jeweller's rouge ?

Your blade is not sharp enough. If your blade is truly sharp, then you can shave with very little pressure, and you won't have to skin yourself. What you are doing is just as PuFFaH says, compensating for the lack of extreme sharpness by using more pressure.
That said, while one good pass can already give you a very nice shave, a 2nd ATG pass would shave even closer. Always. But in some areas you can just use ATG as your first pass and that finishes the shave.

Haha! +2
It's the second pass that make shaving for me lol. My most enjoyable pass! Really enjoy the feeling of the badger brush with after the first pass!

I have to wonder how well the bevel is set, and then beard prep and technique.

My thoughts fall right in line with Puffah's post above. Your razor is not quite sharp enough, and your technique needs a little refining.
The hard ceramic and diamond-polished surface of the Spyderco does not surprise me that you're not seeing a large amount of swarf. You want that stone to polish more that cut anyway.

Yep, I do it all the time.
