I have this spot, well two really, on each side of my head. Just at the jawline straight down from my temple where the hair grows forward and it is impossible to get perfect. I end up nicking myself every time if I try too hard! Anybody else have one of those?
Yup. Just under my jawline on my right side. I've been shaving with a str8 about 2 mos. and the problem area has shrunk from about 4" to under 1" as my technique has improved. Eventually, I'll take care of that last little spot.
Yeah, I have difficulties along the jawline and right next to my goatee. Weird angle for the jawline and skin is too stretchy next to the goatee so I can't get it pulled taught.

left side right under my ear on the back of my jaw bone the grain changes plus it isn't easy to get at anyways. i find stretching the skin is the only way to get it decent but i haven't found the perfect form yet.
I'm still experimenting and practicing different ideas for shaving those spots

It's interesting to hear that a lot of you don't like shaving that area, because it's actually one of my favourite spots to shave.
I imagine the reason you find it difficult is because you're using the so-called "standard" grip, and because you can only move the razor horizontally in that spot as opposed to downwards, it's kind of an awkward grip to use; doubly so if one of your hands is dominant and shaves a lot more effortlessly than the other.
I use a kind of "writing grip" on the razor for these spots (well, more so on the left side), which is great, because I can just sweep through that area with no problem. It's satisfying to shave that spot because it's so close to your ear that you can hear the amplified sound of each whisker as it's cut down.
The stroke I'm talking about is seen in my shaving video.
I have the same trouble with those spots. I have been using different grips and trying some different angles and passes over them it seems like every time I get a little closer. One day I will get it. Its nice to know Im not the only one.
Mine is the XTG going straight up from adams apple to chin.
Had trouble with the area on either side of the adams apple and the crease on either side of my throat but time and practice has cured that.
I guess its just time and technique till I get my skills up to the task.
I have a pretty easy time with that area. I just pull the blade forward using the hand opposite my face. My impoosible spot is under the jawline half way to my chin. The hair grows at an odd angle and it is just tough to get to.:thinking:

You are partially right in my case. For me it IS because it is harder to shave upwards not downwards, but I DO shave upwards in that area. In fact, if I don't shave upwards on much of my face it will NOT be close. That is hard to pull off in a lot of places. Funny, yesterday I had a brand new sharpened blade and I was able to get it close as a baby. I guess that it may depend somewhat on sharpness, but it is indeed harder to maneuver. I have looked at so many videos now on technique and have tried a ton of diff ones, but it keeps coming back to the same ones for me. It is really just a matter I think of me mastering "my technique". It is truly amazing how different people's techniques are! I have seen some vids where people are shaving with the handle. I have tried it myself and the only way that I may use that is if I am shaving UP on my neck, but I actually just prefer using the handle as a balance and that is about it. When I started, I gripped the handle of the Blade (not the actual handle) kind of like a pencile, between two fingers and the other two loosely. I don't know if that is what you are describing or not, although I would like to see your vid, if you have a link! That was how I started and my face paid for it! It didn't work very well for me, then I started to loosely grip it with three fingers on one side of the handle pivot and one on the other, and that really worked well because I tend to push too hard otherwise. Now it is two on one side, two on the other. I see these vids, and I think that some have "easier faces" if that can occur than others! I can't really stretch my skin in so many areas, and I have to switch the balance and the direction a lot to account for the contours. ANd then I have these two moles on my neck that get nicked super easily. I bleed from them all the time.. super annoying!
Under the chin. That's always been a problem for me, even with a DE. I had to buff under there like a fiend to get it smooth after three passes.
