My lather bowl is quite large and works like a charm every time. More room to whip your lather up.
I myself am partial to those giant coffee mugs that look like small soup bowls. No special reason, I just like them. A lot of them are molded imperfectly so there is a little bump on the bottom inside. The little bump gives you some extra agitation to whip that foam into lather. These mugs can be gotten cheap or free.
lathering is like making whip cream it's just watery for a little while and then all of the sudden... boom, it's butter
I have a plastic soup bowl as you might see in a Japanese restaurant. Its a perfect shape for me and it also comes with a lid. But the best part is that it came from a store that sells everything for the equivelent of $2.00 usd.
I used to use one of those big late cups but that wasn't big enough. Now I'm using one of those cooking bowl. It's quite big but it generates so much lather it's crazy!!
I have a glass bowl I got from garden ridge. It's about the size of a cereal bowl and has a lot of dimples on the inside, kind of like a reverse golf ball. It fits very well in the palm of my hand.
My experience is different. Small mugs work as well or better than large bowls for me as long as the brush fits in. Small mugs are more efficient for me, too. At the end of the day, you want the lather in the brush, not in the bowl. You can pump a lot of air into the lather in small mug too, just with slightly different technique.
My 2c...
PS: I use cream exclusively.
I just have a problem with spending more than a few dollars for any mug, bowl etc. Really, these are just simple pieces of pottery, not works of art. $100 scuttles are the most offensive of all, I will never spend my hard earned money on anything so grossly overpriced.
I actually got a scuttle in a trade with a member and don't really use it anymore. It sure looks nice but I like my large bowl better now..
