Shave Products at Retail

Gentlemen,

I'm about a month into SR shaving and loving it. I check out the SOTD forums and see all the fine products that you have an I'm wondering: Do you purchase everything online or are there retail stores in your respective areas where you can get good soaps, creams, brushes, scuttles, etc.?

I'm located in southern NJ, USA outside of Philadelphia. I know there is an Art of Shaving in Philly, but I was wondering if there are any other retails stores besides AOS.

Welcome.

Most of the products are purchased online. However, NY has quite a few locations where products are able to be purchased, not sure how far that is from you. Each city has, I suppose, a few retailers that will carry some of the products you see here, i.e. Proraso, Castle Forbes, DR Harris, etc. Not sure if there is a shopping thread here or not but you might look for some folks from around your area to tap and see what they have come up with.

IMO...I find the Art of Shaving in Philly to be really over priced. Also, when I was in there I was given a really hard time for just buying the aftershave balm.....

I work/live in Harrisburg, but am in Philly often for business. The AOS in King of Prussia doesn't do much for me. High prices, and the times that I've gone in, attended by folks who have less knowledge of the subject than I. Yet, if you like a product they carry, you're in luck. The mall also has a L'Occitane where you can buy some shave products that I've seen mentioned here. And you will find a Bigelow's where you can buy after shaves, colognes, and Poraso shave cream bearing the Bigelow label.

Now in center city Philadelphia, check out the Black Cat Cigar shop. Its on Sansom St around the 16 or 17 hundred block. Its small, crowded and smells of cigars....perfect in my opinion. They also carry some fountain pens and shave products. I bought a large Vulfix brush that is under the name Taylor of Bond Street, and they carry a large line of TOBS products. I do not believe that the Cat yet carries straight razors, strops, or hones as it seems to cater to the wet shave / bad razor community. I think their prices are on par with most of the online shops I frequent. Worth the trip for the creams, soaps and scents....IMHO.

This is some great info. I will check out all those places. Any excuse to stop in for a cigar while buying something else is not an excuse at all! It's the stars aligning!

I'll let you know how I do when I finally make it over there.

You will find allot of the online wetshaving suppliers are members here on SRP. Lynn, Don, Tony Miller, Glen, Max, etc...all are really good people who stand behind their products and are quick to answer any questions you might have. Again, there are quite a few so I apologize for any I might have missed, these are simply the ones that I've had direct contact with. If you purchase from any member/vendor on SRP I feel confident that you will be satisfied with your purchase, that they will ensure.

You also might want to try Holt's Cigars on Walnut. Last time I was there, they had some Trumper products. They were just starting to get into the shaving stuff and were a bit tentative, so I don't know if they stuck with it. Then you can go upstairs, have a cigar and Scotch and watch the game in their wonderful cigar bar. :D
