Shaving on a Cruise Ship

This past week i went on a cruise with my family and i brought my straight razor with me. I brought my Scaramanga shaving box and it held up really well. By the way did anyone go on the Carnival Cruise from Long Beach to Mexico this week? Anyways the first shave was really weird because i was out of my routine and a little sea sick. I was running in and out of the bathroom washing my brush my face all the good stuff. Stropping was a little weird cause i was cramped and had barely any room to strop. Then came the shaving which was weird too. But it came out great and i didnt get any nicks, a first. And i got to wipe my lather off my blade with a towel which was pretty awesome because i will never get to do that at home. Its awesome shaving in a hotel room even though its out of routine. My second shave was perfect everything went well. And i did all this on a ship.

Thats a cool experience/story. Ive always wondered what the shaving experience would be like when traveling. Sounds like ya adapted to a different environment pretty well.

Its weird at first but its awesome. If you ever get the chance do it.

Did it make you feel like a pirate, or an officer on an old sailing ship?

When I travel, mostly to friends and family homes, I just bring the smallest pieces I have. Plastic cup, small tub of TGQ cream soap, small brush, paddle strop, and DD Dwarf razor. Fits in a small bag and doesn't freak out the locals :p

But freaking out the locals is half the fun. I want to hear "Oh my god. What are you doing?!"

I've shaved with a straight razor on a sailboat. That was an old school feeling. I brought a paddle strop because the head (bathroom on a boat)
was rather small.

I don't know man, I'm such a creature of habit that it might drive me crazy. I can't stand it when ANYTHING (other than my own fickle whim) changes my shaving routine...I'm still trying to figure out how to deal with my upcoming ONE NIGHT STAY in a hotel...maybe SingleWedge's "Barber hone as strop" idea will help!

A cruise ship is quite a departure from our normal
`shave dens'...

I've never travelled with a straight before, but I'd
certainly be interested in getting set up and doing
it one day. I think I'd want to pick up another
razor, of course.

I regularly shave with a Feather AC on a friend's narrowboat. Easier than taking strops etc. It's fine until another boat passes and the bathroom starts rocking from side to side! Good fun though and keeps me on my toes!

There are times when it is just as easy to take my mug, brush, cream and fat boy! I have traveled many times since returning to my straight razor--previous life prior to medical residency--and I would not compromise my mug, bursh and cream; but, for a few days my double edge provides a very close shave without the hassel. Like many things, the return home is a much anticipated pleasure!

Traveling - The disposable straight gets the call. I have no desire to lug around my strops.

On a small boat or treking, time to grow the beard and say "AARRRR" to everyone.

When I travel I have found that it is easier to pack my cup, brush and cream and shave with my Gillette Fat Boy.

Did you pack your straight in your checked bag. I am a little bit shaky about taking my beloved inox to mexico with me when the mrs and I vacation down there.

yah man, can straight razors be put on carry on luggage? (i don't check luggage)

I wouldn't try to put it in a carry on. They take a dim view of sharp instruments on airlines. However a couple of years ago I took my straight in a small travel bag while going on the Cape May ferry. I didn't even think about it till the scanned my bag. I was even more afraid after going through and noticed that no one said anything...lol:dropjaw:

I guess the thinking is since its in your bag and in the cargo hold its not available to you as a wepon. I guess when they scan the bags they are looking for a buh, no not a buh a bomb (I am referring to an old movie called Airplane).

I work at the ship and i do not carry my strop and razor with me there. Instead i use my Merkur DE.
Passenger ships are quite steady so shaving with straight might be no problem. It's a bit different on the freighters, tankers and military ships that have a habit of heavy rolling in a rough sea. In time you learn to live and do whatever you want in a rolling ship but i wouldn't try using a straight razor if there's any alternative.

Gentlemen,

The last time I traveled on board an ocean liner, the Queen Elizabeth II, was some years back, when straight razor shaving was still a twinkle in my eye. I had thought of using straights for a long while but somehow failed to act on almost a lifelong dream. At the time I used the double edge.

Should I go on another cruise ship someday, in all likelihood I will take my Feather Artists Club and the travel Merkur double edge. That is part of my travel shave kit now. This way I don't have to carry a strop, and I always fear damage to my real straights. When I have time, I use the Feather, but when in a rush, the little Merkur double edge comes in handy.
