Respect those small blades! #$@&!!!

It seems everybody is always worried about the bigger blades, even I sometimes feel nervous on the real big ones. but to date they've been much friendlier to my face. I got the worst cut yet this morning (two actually, but one is a scratch and one is a frickin CUT!) from my little 5/8 C-Mon spike. I'd been real careful, was making the easiest of passes, straight down the left cheek. must have stopped making my "lips to the right stretchy left cheek" face or just shifted angles slightly. ZWIP, felt is silp right in. isn't it interesting we can never stop the movement fast enough. that pain to hand nerve signal is a bit slow. got a 1/4" gash. and I'm talking deep. lots of styptic, still bleeding, tissue, still slightly bleeding. wept for 15 minutes.

got a couple of pics I'll put up tonight. only later did I notice another scratch about 1/2" away from that one. not a good shaving morning. BUT it's smooth! :D

anyways gents, fear not the large blades, the little ones'll get ya.

Red, a 5/8 is not a little blade in a normal sized hand!
I've got a little 3/8 Heljestrand. It's beautiful. A perfect razor, only in miniature. That little bastard cut's me every time!

No doubt! My Red Imp is not imposing at all compared to some but seems to remind me of it's abilities whenever I get a bit careless! It does, however, provide some of the closest shaves to date.

Remember the Vitamin E!

Did the same the other day with a Shumate spike...bastard got me good on the left jawline...what's ironic is that i was just doing some finishing, touching-up with it. Think im about done with the spiked toes....

The only razor to ever cut me was my 4/8 Bowdins wedge..twice! Left side cheek where the toe dug in.

Neither were bad, but little marks still remind me every day.

Red, was is the spike's point that cut you or somewhere else located along the edge?

I have both spike/square points and round points and shave with both kinds. I like them all. Some people love spike points pretty much exclusively.

I gotta say, I can get away with much more using my roundpoints than I can my spike points. I'm just sayin. Maybe it's being able to get away with a sloppier technique? Maybe.

I don't know that it is sloppy technique as much as simply becoming accustomed to making an arcing sweeping stroke with a round point that will almost always bury the tip of a square or spike point into the cheek.
One can make the same stroke with a square of spike point, it just requires attention to keeping the toe square to the blade. Don't ask me how I think I know that :confused:
OK, on second thought, it is sloppy technique.

I can't believe the timing of this thread. I aquired a 4/8 W&B about 2 months ago, and haven't shaved with it since, due to the fact that it wasn't shave ready and I had never honed a wedge. Since then I have picked up a couple wedges and honed them. So Saturday I decided to dig out that little W&B and give it a shot. I honed it up and shaved with it on Sunday morning. Not only was it the first time I have cut myself in months, but it was a nice 2" long weeper about 1" away from my mouth. I couldn't believe how it happened. Those little razors are evil.:medvl:

Red, on second thought, maybe you were fortunate to get a cut from this little guy versus the "whale" that might have cost you an ear or something worse.

Same here. My worst cut when starting out was with a 4/8 blade. I think it is because it is much easier to get the angle too steep without realizing it, compared to bigger blades.

I agree, I found that I was having to be much more attentive about keeping the razor at an angle, and with a small blade it was much harder to judge, especially if your last shave was with a considerable larger blade. Guess I wasn't attentive enough though.

I don't think it was sloppy technique, it was a slip, i think even when we're really good we make them (not saying I'm really good) but when it isn't a sharp spike they don't cost us. muted spikes, rounds, french, not as bad. My big spike has never caught me like this.

I do have some flaws in my technique though. May be time to watch another video and try to identify them. this was the end of the shave.

tomorrow barber's notch, but as soon as I heel up I tackling this f'er again.

cut was bad enough that two hours later coworker came by my office was chatitng with me and says "you're bleeding again" luckily I keep liquid bandaid in my office, had to go dab some on.

At the moment I'm using two blades to shave - one of my four rotation shavers for the cheeks, neck and chin (all 5/8+), and a small 4/8ish Kraut & Donal spike for my mo and lower lip - I find the small size makes a "fool's pass" easier on my mo, and the spike point and small size also mean it's my touch-up razor to get those few wee patches the larger shaver has missed. Gave me an absolutely perfect shave this morning, so I think I'll be sticking with this method for a wee while. Anyone else tried using two different shavers for one shave?

When I first started I thought this would be a great idea. I was even looking at buying one of those small 3/8 short razors from classic shaving, as I have some interesting sideburns and a goatee to shave around. However, I found that as time passed I could get in and around everywhere with any of my razors. It just helped to develop my technique better. My spike point and french point razors are still the easiest to do detail work with, but I can get a pretty good job done with all of them now.

I have one of those miniture razors, I do a complete shave with it quite often.

I often do, if I'm not using my Dovo Inox blade. But with a CS FHG I will usually pick up either the Inox, a Wapi, or a Double Arrow for the ATG Fool's Pass, because those are much stiffer blades than the FHG. Also, the ATG on the chin is easier with those blades.

Besides, I like variety!

Multiple razors for one shave? I don't, but its all good if it works for you.

I only received small scratches that heal quickly in 48 - 72 hours. However, some look ugly just after the cut and all of my straight blades have taken turns hurting me! :rant: The problem was me and my technique - ahh, the old days!!!

When it doubt, use a light touch and shorter strokes.

OMG wow i was just talking about this.... i was shaving with my litttlest razor earlier , its like a 1/2, and i kept cutting myself, i got a couple nicks and a Cut by my ear that i had to seal up with liquid bandage, it was bleeding like a slit pig.
ive always been more comfortable with the big ones and now ive see why.
