Pinch & Squeeze (PS) Maneuver

Correct. This cannot be done well with a well lathered beard due to pinch and sqeeze slippage. As I do this in end stage clean-up, there isn't much lather left. Sometimes I will dab in this area with a towel to get the right traction. Other times, I might re-apply a very thin layer of lather. I guess it also depends on which shaving cream or soap one is using. The ones with less glycerin are more favorable for this maneuver. And yes, sometimes there is a degree of irritation sacrificed, but not always for me.

Interesting technique. I have a challenging neck area and although I do get a BBS shave, if I rub my fingers ATG on a certain area, I can feel the tips of the hairs since I can not get a true ATG pass due to the length of the razor and the contour of the face. Rub it from any other direction, its smooth BBS.

However, for this area I am fine with the results as I don't want ingrown hairs and this area was prone to ingrown hairs when cut too closely.

That is what I'm talkin' about! ...The feeling of BBS except when rubbing your fingers against the grain. This maneuver allows for BBS even when rubbing ATG. Of course, we are all quite different, and if cutting too closely causes ingrown issues, it might not be the thing for you. I have been doing this for some time now and have not experienced ingrown hair problems. That's just me and my experience. Thanks.

I saw this movie of a Turkish straight razor shave, which seems to employ the pinch & squeeze maneuver as best as I can envision it. Is this what you are referring to?

What is shown in the video would be a variation of what I am actually talking about. In the video, a pinch, squeeze and pull is used. The barber then shaves the area just below the pinched up skin. A very useful technique that gets skin more taught than just pulling.

The manuever that I describe pinches more skin (1-2" vs 1/2" shown here), and shaves the area that is actually pinched up, rather than the area below. I also tend to shave the pinched up skin parallel to the jaw line or parallel to my thumb and forefinger, but this can vary depending on grain of the area. The barber in the video shaves perpendicular to the pinched area, as well as below it.

Do you have the equipment to do a video?

I use slant angles for the blade SE/SW, skin stretching, and knowing the exact pitch (15 - 40) to cut this area to achieve BBS results. It took trial and error passes to figure this out.

I did try the pitch method and the results were the same, but took more time.

Thanks for the feedback. As far as video is concerned, I think that I would have the equipment, but not sure I have the time. Perhaps if there were enough interest, I might give it a go.
