This is my first post, what a great site! Anyway, I'm left handed and was wondering do I have to be careful in what type of blade I buy as far as type of blade, geometry of the blade etc?

Welcome to SRP,
Unless you intend to buy a microtome, you need not be concerned. Most experienced shavers use both hands, and the blades are symmetrical anyhow.

For straight razors your handedness in not a factor. There are numerous references and videos on using one hand or two hand to shave.

I am left handed as well.
Learning to shave two handed is the way to go.
It might even be easier to learn as we are in a right handed world and use our right hand more than you realize.
A good practice exercise is to lather with both hands. Just go slow.
I shave with nothing but my left hand. I've never had issues with that, but I'm a little concerned about buying a Japanese straight (but I really want one).

I'm doing the same thing now. Where in the beginning I only shaved with my right hand, I'm using my left every morning now in conjunction with my right and it's made a big difference. It's getting to be second nature, the razor feels fine in my less dominate hand now and I have good control of it. I'm getting great BBS shaves now each morning and no cuts.

I'm a "lefty" too, and it didn't caused any problem except that there are some spots on my face, that i can't reach too well, so i have to learn to use my right hand too. As i'm very dominantly left handed/footed, it's a problem for me to use my right hand, but i try hard.
So, no problem, if You use only your left hand, and when You feel comfortable, try Your right hand too. But, if You just started to shave straight, i would recommend to use both of Your hands from the beginning. (Unless You are not in a hurry. Because for me using the right hand, it's more time consuming, than oly use the left.)

From the start, I reasoned that if I was was going to shave with a straight razor, I would employ the proper technique. I learned it from Lynn Abrams, my shaving guru, and some others who are masters of the blade.
From what I understand, and have experienced, using both hands in accomplishing the task makes all the sense in the world. It is also part of the esthetic of straight razor shaving.
There is an art to shaving with a straight razor. That not everyone is capable of doing it, or caring enough to do it, makes the art all the more special. So if you're going to do it at all, I figured, do it the right way by using both hands.
