Regarding the throat area

Hey there, my fellow shavers!

A couple of weeks ago I bought a DOVO Shavette. Had a couple of nicks the first time, but overal it was a really good shave.

There's one area that I can't get smooth though, and I can't quite figure out how to shave this area. It's my throat area, you see. Now, I've seen videos of people first shaving downwards, and then upwards. First WTG, then ATG, as they put it. For me, both passes are XTG though :o The hair in my throat area grows sideways, outwards from the center. I've been trying to shave that are WTG, but I just can't seem to get the angle right.

Does anyone else have these horizontally growing hairs, and how do you shave that area?

I had a similar problem. I tend to simply go straight down on the first pass, which is effectively XTG. On my second pass, I do a sything pass. Moving the blade into the direction of travel as I go from the base of my neck to my chin.

How ever, this is a difficult area to shave, so don't try too hard - you will end up bloody. As you get more proficient and more comfortable with the razor, you are likely to come up with your own way of doing things. If the two XTG passes are working, and they probably should, keep on plugging away.

Yes, the hair on my neck grows wild, in all directions and I've always assumed it's the same for others. The scything action Gregs656 suggested is what works best for me as well, but be careful. It can be awkward to master at first. And the neck bleeds profusely, when assaulted.

I see. I'll try that scything action you're talking about. I'll keep some alum handy :p And maybe a phone ;)

All the hair on my neck grows towards a point on my right jaw. The hardest stroke there is down (ATG) on my right side, though sideways under my chin isn't easy either.

The best I've found is to go Up all across my neck. The next stroke will be down, everywhere but the right side. That right side I come up again, but on a very definite scything angle, which I use on the rest of my neck for the final pass.

Actually I've considered the same thing. When I'm twisting my arms around my face to get a right angle, I think back of the days that I shaved with my trusty safety razor. But I will succeed ;D Even if I get cut. I've got alum anyway ;D

This is a little more difficult to explain, I think, but rather than actually sything you can hold the blad angled into the grain and do a simple south - north pass. That, produces a similar result at a lower risk of nicking your self.

I have these really pesky hairs that grow on either side of my adams apple. They grow in those sunken hollows and after the north to south and south to north pass, there they are grinnin http://straightrazorpalace.com/images/icons/icon10.gif at me. Well I decided to use a two pronged attack. First a smilie razor and second move the hair out of their hollow. That is move the hairs by stretching the skin so the rascals are setting on a high spot or at least a flatter spot and give them the lope.

I have similar hair growth. From the bottom of my goatee to the top of my adams apple the hair grows from the left side of my jaw towards the right, below that on my neck it grows towards my ears from the center. I haven't figured out the hair on my neck yet, it's such an awkward angle to try and shave. The other area I make a pass that's straight down and the second pass is somewhere between XTG and ATG. It took me quite a while to figure out how to do it right, just go slow and with some practice you'll get the hang of it.

I don't know if this will help you, but I find that if I put the right amount of downward skin tension and turn my head just right, both sides of my neck will be perfectly flat. This has really decrease the amount of weepers I get from shaving my neck.
