King of Shaves Shaving Oil Report

Had a small bottle (aren't they all?) of "King of Shaves" Shaving Oil I have had for a while, and decided to try it this morning.

They claim on the bottle, that you can shave with just this oil!! (ya - riiiight!) or use it as a pre/undershave, which I did. A few drops - maybe 6 or so, rubbed into the wetted beard after the shower.

I put some ClassicShaving Citrus soap over the top with my brush. I used the Perlmann (which I am now convinced was mfg'd by TI), because I had just honed it, and used the green .50 Hand American paste on it for the first time, then stropped it up good.

Well, I was pleasantly surprised! I had no hopes, but the shave was *very* easy and smooth, and I will try this oil again! (Of course, the now frightfully sharp razor helped! LOL!) I foget how much I paid for it - a few bucks $5 - $6? I got it at CVS - a big pharmacy chain here. Not bad!!! Can't really compare to the Cremo Cream as an underlayer, but truly did make for a smoother, easier shave!

My only concern would be its effects on the badger brush, and whether it will gunk that up - don't know.

On a scale of 1 - 10, a really solid 8!

Picked up a tube of the King of Shaves shaving gel at the CVS here. It was right next to the oil. Haven't tried it yet though.

The Somersets Shaving Oil I just tested said the same thing: 3 or 4 drops and no need for anything else. I tried it sans cream and didn't really like it. But with oil first then cream... sweet!

I just got a sample package from Trumper. Cant wait! They even sent me some Coral Skin Food and some Limes. I've dying to try the Skin Food, I have heard so many positive things about it here.

Richard at shavemyface.com uses Pacific Shave Oil (similar products). He not only applies pre-shave, but between passes as well. He should own stock in the company, and he has never complained about brush issues. I think as long as you are careful to rinse thoroughly, and give your brush a montly Borax soak, there should be no problem.

I just registered over at ShaveMyFace, to follow some of the discussions over there. (Can never read TOO much about shaving!) I won't worry too much about the oil issue, I think I like the Prorasso, or the Cremo Cream better, anyway, and they are both real creams.

I love all the accoutrements of shaving as well as the actual act itself!!!

I also love my nwe SRP razors! WOW they shave nice!

I picked up a bottle of the K of S oil last night for $3 at Wally World. It's the green menthol one. Tried it out this afternoon before heading out to work, and just for kicks I actually shaved in the shower. I know I know - danger will robinson and all that crap but I have never dropped a razor of any type in 25+ years of shaving so I figured my odds were pretty good. Either that or I'm about due to drop one HAH Anyway I did the normal shower, filled up a small pail that my baby girl plays with in there and then cranked the head down to a slow slow trickle to save water. I guess I should clarify we have what you might call an odd shower. My wife is Japanese, so when we built this place a lot of thought (and budget) went into the bath. It's a big marble room sealed in with heavy glass, and has a deep Japanese bath style soaking tub inside the room on the other side from the shower head, and a big drain in the middle of the floor. The whole thing is waterproof/steamproof and is only vented by a ceiling exhaust fan, or when you swing upen the door. The kids love it, they can do cannonballs. Anyway, next to the shower head I have a small shaving mirror suction-cupped to the wall that I can stand right up close to, and obscured glass block on the other side of the mirror which provides great natural light. The glass block is recessed, so there is about a 4" shelf "windowsill" sort of place to set everything - the soap bowl and brush, the razor, and a wet washrag folded to wipe the razor on between passes. Anyway, while still wet and steamy, I rubbed the oil all over my beard, then brushed up a lather with Conk amber. No ill effects to the brush by the way, I think the soap actually behaved like soap and washed the oil out of it. The shave was my best yet. Man I felt like I could make passes all day without irritation. That along with really getting a birds eye view up close. I re-lathered three times, but only used the oil under the first lather and it seemed to stick around. When I was all done and after rinsing my face under the shower, my face felt clean, not oily. I'm sold on oil now. Maybe the shower made a difference, but the oil really did prevent my face from getting "squeaky" at any point during the shave. It stayed slick. A HEAVY slick, like I was shaving OIL off my face at first (go figure), but it worked. No irritation whatsoever. I kinda like the shaving in the shower too, that was cool. As long as you're careful and respect what you're holding, I don't see why not. Now in a few decades when I get senile and shaky it may be a different story, but I'm not too concerned now. Now there's another problem....other oils out there to try!

I have started using the oil too, but in a different way. I bought it, used it once and then stopped. I didn'y like what it did to the whiskers. Yeah, it lubed the face, but it made the whiskers so sloppy that it interfered with shaving them.

However, once I get down to a fine stubble and I'm ready to cut to skin, I apply the oil and it is great. The skin is well lubed and the whiskers are so short that the oil doesn't affect them. The best of both worlds for cutting down to skin.
