tried something different - great results!

So I was reading something today about how shaving removes layers of skin cells, and I got an idea: maybe the key to BBS without irritation wasn't only being extra careful in the final, ATG pass.

When I shaved, I was a lot more conscious of using little to no pressure during the WTG and XTG passes. In other words, I used even less than I would normally feel to be "not irritating". Sure enough, after a usual careful ATG pass, not only did I feel less irritated, I wasn't even the slightest bit red anywhere! :rock: The aftershave splash afterwards barely tingled.

In short, the effects of passes are definitely cumulative, and having a lighter touch earlier in the shave gives you more remaining skin as a buffer later on.

When I first started shaving I thought I was using a light touch, but as it turns out, every time I go to shave I actually notice that my touch keeps getting lighter and lighter giving me not only a closer shave but a less irritated one to boot. This is also eliminating the need for a third full pass to a third touch up pass.
Note: I've been shaving for a little over 2 weeks now.

The thing I don't like about balms is they don't have that splash that I so thoroughly enjoy

I do find as I get older, a good spritz is nice...

Haha - now I get it. For clarification, is the pet peeve related to calling the product itself a splash, or to saying that one splashes it on, or to the word in any context, or...?

You have discovered one of the final truths to straight shaving grasshopper.

That's one of the reasons rookies get all the irritation. They keep going over the same areas again and again. The fewer times you have to pass over the area combined with the proper angle and proper pressure or lack of it is the recipe for that perfect shave. A great razor will help too of course.

I splashed some bay rum on tonight after 2 full passes and it didn't hurt a bit.

Only went for BBS on cheeks though since it's so late and I want a nice shave tomorrow.

Man the bay rum aftershave splash makes my day. Wish I could splash that stuff on more often.

I guess I could splash it on more often, but it'd use up too much precious splash.

More on-topic (I think), I also think that having a lighter touch earlier in the shave leaves you with more skin. This is a good thing :) It makes the aftershave splash all that much more enjoyable. Shave lightly, splash liberally. That's the key
