OK, well, maybe not... but I can now shave with the straight exclusively, closer than a safety, & not nicking myself any worse than I would have done w/the safety. And I've only been doing this for a couple weeks! Thanks guys, I couldn't have done it without you! I wish I'd done this long ago.
This morning in fact. All it took was having my razors honed and a whole lot less pressure with the blade while shaving. No nicks, no burn!!! WOOHOO!!!
My closest and most comfortable shave yet!!! :)

Congratulations to you! But, based on your post, it's TOMORROW's shave you better watch out for!

Pardon my ignorance, but why is tomorrow's shave the one to watch out for? I'll be using my TI tomorrow (used the Dovo today) which is the one that got me on Saturday but I plan on using a whole lot less pressure tomorrow versus Saturday.
I'll keep you posted...LOL !

Okay, the bulb finally brightened. Because I said that today's shave was a great one, tomorrow's shave is probably going to be an arse-kickin' and a blood-lettin' shave. :eek:
Hopefully, I'll use the same caution and care that I've been using and it won't be too bad. LOL

Amen my brother. Everytime I say something like that it angers the Shave Gods and I cut the living crap out of myself. I think I have been using my straight razor for about 7 months now, and even though I get consistently close shaves with no trauma, I still have much to learn.Quote:

My thinking on watching out for tomorrow's shave really is more along the lines of "overconfidence". You, the Superman theory...I survived a close call, so now I am bulletproof!!!
I've seen a lot of guys bragging about their great DE shaves only to see that a day or two later they are back asking the "what happened" questions, and blaming their blades, razors, brushes, cream, prep work, humidity, Pres. Bush and anything/anyone else they can blame!

I was just happy that I got my first comfortable shave. Actually, if anything, I am overly cautious. I shave with extreme caution. It takes me 45/50 minutes to shave in the morning...about 5 to 10 of those minutes are beard preparation.
I have a whole lot of respect for what I'm holding in my hand. I've been shaving with a straight for about 6 weeks now. I'm far from accomplished, believe me. However, I am trying different things to learn what works and what doesn't.
Today's shave was okay. Only two nice nicks on each side of my chin. I didn't know Sandalwood shave cream lathered up red! LOL. Anyway, my chin is the most difficult area for me. Just can't get comfortable shaving that area. Anyone have any advice? Thanks,

What I do for my chin is grip the blade by the spine between my thumb and my forefinger like gripping a (very wide) guitar pick. When I make the S->N pass, I grip it with the edge up & rest the back of my thumb under my chin & scythe using the wrist. This seems to lend extra control.

Though I've only been shaving with straights for a little over 2 months now, it was a month ago I came to the conclusion I would never go back to a disposable or electric again. In my opinion, this is the only way to shave... any other way is a sad girly-man shortcut. :D
There are many technological innovations where the "improvement" is that the new way is easier or more convenient. The end result might not be any better, and it may even be worse. The move from reel-to-reel to cassette tape is one such innovation. The move to disposables is another.

Seems to me that much "progress" and "innovation" is mostly marketing hype to replenish some persons' (already overflowing) pockets and encourage the waste disposal industry. Not only shaving, consumer electonics but almost any other field.
Opting for a str8 and excluding disposables from one's budget will scarcely be understood as good citizenship in a world feverishly devoted to economic growth.

I almost reached shave nirvana today: I pre-stropped, got under the shower, pointed my face at it on superhot for about 5 minutes then quickly lathered up and started shaving with the razor I got from usted (Its great by the way). Was all going superbly until I got to the moustache (my personal nemesis), I seem to get an inordinate amount of pull in that region due, I think, to razor being at a non-optimal angle because of my nose getting in the way and the fact that I dont think I know the best way to get that skin taut. Apart from that I was as smooth as I have been since I was 12 (especially the troublesome under-chin) with no nicks and no burn. Any tips for a beginner wanting to reach shaving enlightenment?
I'm amazed at how much simply pulling my nose aside (away from the side of the lip I am shaving) helps. it's in all the diagrams in the barber texts. What if you shave it first as well so the moustache is at its softest.

I push the tip of my nose up and keep the blade almost at 90 degrees at the very top of my moustache only under my nose. Yes, you need to be careful using your blade like this. :eek: But, you keep that angle only until you start moving down when you can move your blade to a better shaving angle. I do this everyday and haven't cut, or even nicked, myself yet...knock on wood. The key is patience and being careful. Once you shave the the area immediately under your nose, you can adjust your blade to an angle to give you better cutting action to shave the rest of your upper lip. I hope this makes sense and you understand what I'm trying to say.

under the nose, I begin up top with the blade "dangerously" perpindicular to my upper lip. Never rest the razor there, but make contact with the skin when you're already in the downstroke. This is key for me, I sort of "roll" the tang between my fingers during the stroke in order to get the edge going down towards my mouth while keeping the spine gliding on the bottom of my nose towards the lip. I've probably just confused the hell out of you. If it does make sense and you employ this method, it will become second nature in no time. I've never had to move my nose aside and haven't had any ittitation/nicks there is a long long time.
